Medical Billing and Coding Specialist
Responsibilities
- Perform billing activities in a timely manner, including surgical billing, physician billing, and coding.
- Assist with chart audits to identify areas for improvement and resolve issues as needed.
- Ensure claims are coded and processed accurately and promptly.
- Work primary holds daily for all billing-related follow-up and communicate with practice staff and physicians to address any necessary improvements.
- Act as a liaison between practices and other Saint Peter’s Healthcare System departments, as well as with physician billing vendors.
- Aid the Billing/Coding Coordinator with related projects and issues as they arise.
- Interpret financial responsibilities for patients, providing them with clear and concise information about healthcare coverage before or at the time of service.
- Counsel patients when notified of the need and provide educational support to physicians/surgeons regarding diagnosis and procedure codes (ICD-10 and CPT).
- Assist in the education and training of office staff on various billing and coding functions, such as charge entry, managing hold buckets, and performing precertifications.
- Ensure timely payments through follow-up on denials and open accounts receivable, collaborating with facility and physician billing representatives.
- Resolve problems related to registration, charge entry, coding, and payment reconciliation.
- Conduct billing-related project research to recommend improvements in efficiency, productivity, and cost-effectiveness.
- Maintain an orderly and efficient work area, adhering to safety, emergency, infection control, and performance improvement guidelines.
Requirements
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in an office setting, specifically in billing and coding, and accounts receivable.
- Ability to use sound judgment, act independently, and manage workloads effectively.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills to interact with a diverse group of callers, physicians, patients, visitors, and other healthcare professionals.
- Efficiency in a fast-paced environment, problem-solving, and prioritizing workload.
- Knowledgeable in medical coding and documentation guidelines.
- Keyboarding skills and proficiency in MS Office programs, as well as the ability to learn in-house billing and coding programs.
- CPC certification required or obtained within the first year of employment.
Pay
Salary Range: $24.33 - $38.93 USD
Saint Peter’s offers competitive base rates determined by factors such as job-related work experience, internal equity, and industry-specific market data. Additionally, some positions may be eligible for clinical certification pay and shift differentials.
