About the role

The Medical Assistant at NCH is responsible for providing basic care to patients following established standards and practices. This role includes escorting patients to exam/procedure rooms, assisting with patient care, documenting interventions, and fulfilling clerical responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Fulfill patient care responsibilities as assigned, including checking schedules and organizing patient flow.
  • Escort patients to exam/procedure rooms.
  • Observe, record, and report patient observations and reactions to drugs and treatments to providers.
  • Assist patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exams, etc.
  • Collect patient history including current medications, allergies, symptoms, etc.
  • Provide patient care as directed by the provider, which may include screenings, treatments in accordance with established standards.
  • Assist providers with various procedures as needed.
  • Document in the Electronic Medical Record and relay information/instructions to patients/families.
  • Document all interventions, phone calls, patient/family responses, medication dispensed or prescribed, hospital data.
  • Answer patient phone calls and messages, act as a communication liaison between the patient and provider.
  • Fulfill clerical responsibilities as assigned, such as filing or sending medical records, appointment scheduling.
  • Collect and handle lab specimens following established standards and practices.
  • Adhere to infection control safety guidelines, maintain equipment, instruments, and stock supplies.
  • Utilize electronic referrals process to complete requested physician referrals to NCHMD specialists and ancillary services.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of High School or GED required.
  • Completion of Medical Assistant or practical nursing training program with documented clinical practicum hours; OR Medical Assistant certification; OR a minimum of one-year experience performing above duties in a medical office setting or medical capacity.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • Verified ability to take accurate patient vital signs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively articulate and explain required information to patients.
  • Knowledge of CPT and ICD9 codes.
  • Intermediate computer knowledge: Uses Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows.
  • Knowledge of basic and specialty specific medical terminology.
  • Capable of working under pressure in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions while maintaining a professional demeanor and control.
