About the role

The Medical Assistant in Surgical Care provides clinical support to surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare providers. This role involves patient preparation, assisting during procedures, and performing administrative tasks as needed to ensure a smooth, efficient surgical workflow.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for surgical procedures, including taking vital signs and reviewing medical history
  • Absorb and assist providers during minor procedures and support the surgical team
  • Educate patients and families on pre- and post-operative care instructions
  • Maintain accurate patient records and documentation in compliance with policies
  • Perform basic clinical tasks, such as phlebotomy, specimen collection, and administering medications under supervision
  • Ensure cleanliness and readiness of examination and procedure areas

Requirements

  • Current AAMA, NHA, AMT, NCCT, or NREMT certification preferred or achieved within one year of eligibility
  • Current BLS certification required or must obtain within 30 days of start date
  • A NH Med Tech License, or NH EMT and National Registry EMT license is required for those positions located in New Hampshire
  • One year of experience as a Medical Assistant (without certification) or as a MaineHealth Clinical Team Assistant; or 6 months of experience as a certified Medical Assistant

Qualifications

Education: High School diploma or GED preferred. Must meet one of the following requirements: Graduated from an accredited vocational institution or community college in Medical Assisting with 160 hours of clinical experience completed; or completion of an Adult Education Medical Assistant program and 6 months of clinical experience in a practice setting; or 1 year of clinical experience in a multi-provider practice setting (equivalent experience will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis).
