About the role
Everyone is a caregiver at UMass Memorial Health – regardless of their title or responsibilities. This position supports office/clinic functions under the direction of licensed clinicians.
Responsibilities
- Escorts patients to examination rooms
- Takes and records vital signs
- Collections and documents patient health status
- Performs EKG’s, phlebotomy, POC tests
- Prepares, documents, and administers non-intravenous injections
- Aids in physical examinations and clinical procedures
- Reviews laboratory results and reports abnormalities
- Communicates patient observations to appropriate licensed clinician
- Sets up and prepares rooms for patient care
- Assists in moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients
- Operates sterilization/cleaning systems
- Maintains assigned office and clinical supplies
- Processes prescription and refills
- Performs clerical duties such as typing, filing, scheduling appointments, and generating letters
- Collaborates with insurers to verify coverage, eligibility, and obtain pre-authorization for treatments
- Collects co-payments from patients
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or Heart Saver (HS) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Medical Assistant credential, approved by the Massachusetts Department of Health (ARMA, NHA, etc.)
Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions
The position requires work indoors in a patient care office or clinic environment. It involves hand dexterity, hearing, and vision abilities to take direction from patients or providers, adjust equipment, observe, and describe patient observations. Lifting up to 50 pounds is required, along with standing, walking, bending, and pushing heavy equipment frequently.
