Pelican Bay State Prison's (PBSP) mission is to provide constitutional medical, dental, and mental health care in a timely, safe, and efficient manner, while addressing preventative health services, chronic disease management, and public health issues to reduce unnecessary morbidity and mortality and protect public health by providing patients timely access to safe, efficient medical care, and coordinate the delivery of medical care with mental health, dental, and disability programs.

Located along the Pacific Coast among Redwoods and pristine rivers and just 20 miles from the Oregon border, Pelican Bay State Prison's (PBSP) mission is to provide constitutional medical, dental, and mental health care in a timely, safe, and efficient manner, while addressing preventative health services, chronic disease management, and public health issues to reduce unnecessary morbidity and mortality and protect public health by providing patients timely access to safe, efficient medical care, and coordinate the delivery of medical care with mental health, dental, and disability programs.

Job Description and Duties

Effective July 1, 2025, in accordance with the applicable Memorandum of Understanding, the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) was implemented in response to the status of the State budget. PLP 2025 requires each full-time employee in Bargaining Unit 20 , and related Excluded, Exempt and Statutory Exempt employees, will have their base salary reduced by 3 percent and will receive 5 PLP 2025 leave credits monthly through June 2027. Salaries do not reflect the recent changes. Part-time employees are subject to the same conditions as full-time employees, on a prorated basis equivalent to their time-base. Permanent intermittent employees are subject to the same condition as full-time employees, based on the number of hours worked in the pay period.

Please be advised of the following additional pay benefits individuals may be eligible for. Employees who are employed at Pelican Bay State Prison (PBSP) for 12 consecutive qualifying pay periods will receive an annual $2600 recruitment and retention bonus. Please note: This classification is subject to Section 5, Hiring-Above-Minimum (HAM) Authorization of the California State Civil Service Pay Scales. The authorized HAM rate for this classification is $4556.00.

Minimum Qualifications

• Possession of a valid certificate from an agency approved by the Department of Consumer Affairs, Medical Board of California to practice as a Medical Assistant.
• The Department of Consumer Affairs approved Agencies include: American Association of Medical Assistants, American Medical Certification Association, American Medical Technologists, California Certifying Board of Medical Assistants, Multi-skilled Medical Certification Institute, Inc.
• You must have ACTIVE certification status prior to appointment into the classification.
