Job Profile

Mercy Hospital St. Louis is seeking a compassionate, patient-focused Medical Assistant to join our Pediatric Orthopedics team at the New Ballas Clinic Towers.

Position Summary

The Medical Assistant supports physicians and advanced practice providers by delivering direct and indirect patient care in a professional, courteous, and efficient manner. The Medical Assistant provides both clinical and administrative support, ensuring efficient clinic operations while creating a positive experience for patients.

Responsibilities

  • Welcome pediatric patients and families and escort patients to examination rooms.
  • Obtain and accurately document vital signs, height, weight, and other patient information.
  • Collect, verify, and update medical histories, medication lists, and patient demographics.
  • Prepare patients for examinations, treatments, and orthopedic procedures.
  • Absorb and document patient information, perform basic diagnostic testing, and assist with clinical procedures as directed.
  • Reinforce patient and family education provided by physicians or nurses regarding treatment plans, medications, and follow-up care.
  • Observe and report patient concerns, changes, or needs to the provider.

Documentation & Care Coordination

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Absorb and coordinate referrals, imaging appointments, therapy services, and follow-up visits.
  • Facilitate communication between patients, families, providers, and outside healthcare organizations.
  • Ensure appropriate documentation is completed and available for patient visits.

Administrative Support

  • Answer phone calls and respond to patient inquiries professionally and compassionately.
  • Assist with patient check-in, check-out, appointment scheduling, and other front-office functions when needed.
  • Manage incoming faxes, scanned documents, and electronic communications.
  • Support clinic workflow to ensure efficient patient throughput and provider schedules.

Safety & Quality

  • Maintain exam room cleanliness and readiness between patient visits.
  • Stock and organize clinical supplies and notify leadership of inventory needs.
  • Follow infection prevention, patient safety, and regulatory guidelines at all times.
  • Participate in staff meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and ongoing education opportunities.
  • Adhere to all Mercy policies, procedures, and Service Standards.

Additional Duties

  • Support clinic operations and special projects as assigned.
  • Perform additional responsibilities within the Medical Assistant scope of practice and applicable regulations.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Requirements: High School Diploma or GED required. Must complete Mercy Medical Assistant Clinic Academy training upon hire.
  • Skills & Abilities: Strong communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work effectively with pediatric patients and families, proficiency with electronic health records and clinical documentation, ability to multitask and adapt in a fast-paced specialty clinic environment, commitment to patient-centered care and teamwork, demonstrated ability to work respectfully with diverse patient populations.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program, one (1) year of experience in an outpatient, ambulatory, pediatric, orthopedic, or specialty clinic setting preferred, Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred.
  • Knowledge: Familiarity with orthopedic procedures, casting, splinting, and musculoskeletal conditions preferred, knowledge of outpatient clinical workflows and patient care processes.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds on a regular basis, frequent standing and walking throughout the workday, ability to bend, kneel, squat, reach, twist, and grip while performing patient care duties, ability to safely assist pediatric patients during examinations and procedures.
