Job Description: Orthopedic Clinic Medical Assistant Functions as a member of the clinic patient care team performing clinical tasks and procedures to support the delivery of care. Provides administrative support to the clinic and to Orthopedic service line. POSITION SUMMARY Functions as a member of the clinic patient care team performing clinical tasks and procedures to support the delivery of care. Provides administrative support to the clinic and to Orthopedic service line. PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Provides support for the Bay Area Orthopedics clinic staffPrepares patients for the health care visit by directing and/or accompanying them to the examining room; provides examination gowns and drapesVerifies patient information by interviewing the patient; reviews and/or records medical history and current medications, takes accurate patient weight, vital signs, and confirms the purpose of the visit or treatmentSupports patient care delivery by helping health care providers during examinationsSafely Administers medications (oral, intradermal, SQ and IM)Provides basic wound carePerforms waived lab testing upon completion of competencyOrganizes patient scheduling, prepares patient charts, retrieves and files patient medical records, x-rays, and other medical imagesMaintains all files and keeps filing up to date Contacts insurance providers, obtaining appropriate referral numbers, pre-authorizations, and pre-certificationsWorks with the Hospital and Ambulatory Services computer systems, registers patients, obtains admission and billing information and orders lab workAssists the department in developing, preparing, and documenting State, Federal and Joint Commission requirementsAnswers telephone, prepares referrals, schedules patient appointmentsCollects specimens from patients of all ranges of age and uses correct tubes and handling for appropriate testing and labels specimens accuratelyProvides secretarial/receptionist services in an efficient and professional mannerAssists with daily patient billing (professional and technical) and enters charges into computer systems as needed Performs daily, weekly and/or monthly statistics as neededOrders supplies as necessary Ensures assigned areas are adequately stocked, cleaned and organizedKeeps equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshoots breakdowns, maintains supplies, performs preventative maintenance and calls for repairs, if necessary SKILLS AND ABILITIES Demonstrates the ability to use a personal computer and various software programs applicable to the position Demonstrates the ability to operate applicable office equipmentExhibits the ability to deal effectively interdepartmentally & with the publicExhibits the ability to maintain confidentiality, think and act independently with minimal supervisionMedical TerminologyMaintains regular, consistent and punctual attendance at the assigned job locationDemonstrates excellent written and oral communication skills EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES/DEGREES American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS)Certified Medical Assistant or obtain within 16 months of hireCollege level education in secretarial sciences preferredCompletion of basic medical terminology preferredHigh School diploma or equivalent preferred EXPERIENCE One (1) year recent medical assistant experience preferredRecent Orthopedic Clinic experience preferred GENERAL INFORMATION Union Affiliation: UFCW The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position.
