Medical Assistants perform administrative and clinical duties under the direct supervision of a medical provider—physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner—in the medical office setting.

The Medical Assistant works closely with the physician in the practice/center clinical setting, assists with direct patient care, and serves as the clinical liaison between physician and patient and between physician and office staff. This role promotes communication among all care providers, patients, and office staff regarding the care plan for the patient as defined by the attending physician. The incumbent attends to patients utilizing age-appropriate principles of growth and development for patients of all ages according to the practice specialty.

Responsibilities

  • Taking patients to rooms
  • Greeting patients
  • Obtaining vital signs
  • Scheduling appointments
  • Assisting with medical procedures
  • Answering phones
  • Performing phlebotomy
  • Clerical and computer work
  • Obtaining lab specimens
  • Prior authorizations
  • Adhering to safety and infection guidelines
  • Billing and coding
  • Maintaining electronic medical records (EMR)
  • Faxing
  • Calculating and administering medications and vaccinations
  • Disability and Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) paperwork

Training Program

No experience? Norton Healthcare offers a full-time, 40 hours a week paid training program. Training consists of a combination of classroom and clinical training. The program schedule is Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM.

  • Classroom Training: Held at 1001 Breckenridge Ln, Louisville, KY 40207.
  • Clinical Training: Completed at different locations throughout Louisville and Southern Indiana.

Upon successful completion of the Medical Assistant Trainee program, you will transition into a full-time Medical Assistant role.

The program provides education on the following topics:

  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Medical Terminology
  • Medication Math
  • Pharmacology
  • Clinical and Administrative Skills

Qualifications

Required for Medical Assistant:

  • Graduate of a medical assistant program or
  • One year as a Medical Assistant

Required for Medical Assistant Trainee:

  • High School Diploma
  • No experience required (comprehensive on-the-job training provided)
