Schedule

  • Three 12-hour shifts per week with a weekend rotation
  • Weekend rotation: every third weekend working both Saturday and Sunday
  • Required to work one major holiday and one minor holiday per year

Responsibilities

The Medical Assistant performs administrative and clinical duties under the direct supervision of a medical provider—physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner—in the medical office setting. This role works closely with the physician, assists with direct patient care, and serves as the clinical liaison between the physician, patient, and office staff.

  • Promote communication among care providers, patients, and office staff regarding patient care plans
  • Attend to patients utilizing age-appropriate principles of growth and development

Clinical Functions

  • Taking patients to rooms
  • Obtaining vital signs
  • Assisting with medical procedures
  • Performing phlebotomy
  • Obtaining lab specimens
  • Calculating and administering medications and vaccinations
  • Adhering to safety and infection guidelines

Administrative Functions

  • Greeting patients
  • Scheduling appointments
  • Answering phones
  • Clerical and computer work
  • Prior authorizations
  • Billing and coding
  • Maintaining electronic medical records (EMR)
  • Faxing
  • Disability and Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) paperwork

Training Program

No experience? Norton Healthcare offers a full-time, paid training program (40 hours per week). Training consists of classroom and clinical components:

  • Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM
  • Classroom training: 1001 Breckenridge Ln, Louisville, KY 40207
  • Clinical training: Various locations throughout Louisville and Southern Indiana

Upon successful completion, you will transition into a full-time Medical Assistant role. The program covers:

  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Medical Terminology
  • Medication Math
  • Pharmacology
  • Clinical and Administrative Skills

Qualifications

For Medical Assistant Role

  • Graduate of a medical assistant program or
  • One year of experience as a Medical Assistant

For Medical Assistant Trainee Program

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • No prior experience required (comprehensive on-the-job training provided)
