Learn About a Day in the Life of a Medical Assistant

  • Greeting patients and escorting them to exam rooms
  • Taking patients’ vital signs and other medical information
  • Performing administrative tasks such as entering, maintaining, and reporting medical history, medical coding, and filing claims using an EMR
  • Preparing and sterilizing medical instruments
  • Maintaining exam rooms and ensuring patient privacy, comfort, safety, and hygiene
  • Assisting with inventory management and stock replenishment
  • Passing along patient information for prescriptions, x-rays, or lab requisitions to necessary parties

Job Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Basic Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Microsoft Office knowledge
  • BLS certification within 14 days of hire or transfer into the role and prior to providing direct patient care

Preferred Job Requirements

  • An associate’s degree
  • Completion of an accredited medical assistant/medical technologist school/program or two years of MA experience
  • A current national certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA)
