Medical Assistant Lead- Primary Care Clinic- Full Time

About the Role

At Ochsner Health, the Medical Assistant Lead provides individualized, medical care of assigned patients in person, electronically, and via telephone under the supervision of a licensed health care provider. This role encompasses all aspects of a Medical Assistant position while also serving as an informal leader, ambassador, change agent, quality champion, and mentor to other Medical Assistants. The Medical Assistant Lead offers support, guidance, and training, ensuring high standards of patient care and operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

• Supports the patient and provider throughout the patient visit, ensuring preparation and addressing patient questions.
• Provides excellent patient service through effective communication both over the phone and in person.
• Performs basic laboratory tests, administers injections, and collects specimens.
• Completes appropriate documentation, including patient registration, preauthorizations, or referrals.
• Performs required responsibilities based on departmental standard work with minimal supervision, demonstrating versatility across multiple specialty areas.
• Handles surgery scheduling as part of the role.
• Maintains advanced clinical knowledge, technical skills, training, and credentials through professional development.
• Manages clinical supply inventory.
• Serves as a resource and mentor for medical assistants, providing training and coaching.
• Meets the procedures of the Department of Transportation Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Programs, if working in an occupational health clinic.
• Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, respecting privacy and tailoring communication style.
• Performs other duties as assigned and complies with all policies and standards.
• Remains knowledgeable on current federal, state, and local laws, accreditation standards, or regulatory requirements relevant to the assigned area.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent (required).
• 3 years of experience as a medical assistant (required).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (required).
• Medical Assistant Certification (required).

Skills

• Advanced clinical knowledge.
• Proficiency in using computers, software, and web-based applications.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly and professionally.
• Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
