Under direct supervision of the on-site provider, assists in the delivery of patient care. Performs delegated medical tasks, assists providers and nursing staff with patient care, and may perform clerical duties. Utilizes the electronic medical record (EMR) for documentation. Requires access to medication storage areas and transport of medications.

Responsibilities

  • Greets patients in a courteous, friendly, respectful, and professional manner, maintaining eye contact when appropriate.
  • Follows communication protocols and responds to customer questions, concerns, or complaints, pursuing service recovery when expectations are not met.
  • Gathers and documents brief history and chief complaint in the medical record.
  • Accurately completes and documents patient questionnaires, health screenings, and chief complaint in the EMR to support optimal care.
  • Acts as a clinical resource for Medical Assistant I.
  • Follows established practice workflows to facilitate efficiency and timely service to patients.
  • Prepares patients for examination by the healthcare provider.
  • Performs and documents vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature) and risk screening on all patients per hospital or practice policy.
  • Reports out-of-range vital signs and risk screening results to the provider.
  • Assists provider with procedures and performs routine clinical testing, including but not limited to:
    • Obtaining blood and urine specimens
    • Vision testing and hearing screening
    • Incentive spirometry
    • EKG
    • Point of care testing
    • Vital signs
  • Follows established guidelines or protocols to obtain necessary testing based on the chief complaint prior to the exam.
  • Provides pre-printed patient education materials as directed by the provider.
  • Performs high-level disinfection of equipment, instruments, and environment per hospital or practice procedure.
  • Stocks and restocks supplies and exam rooms, ensuring necessary supplies are available in the clinical area.
  • Ensures equipment in the clinical area has a current clinical engineering sticker and is ready for use.
  • Provides care appropriate to the patient population(s) served, assessing data reflective of patient requirements relative to population-specific and age-specific needs.
  • Participates in medical assistant skill development and competency evaluation.
  • Engages in practice-based process improvement efforts and clinic huddles/staff meetings.
  • Meets all competencies specific to the practice site.
  • Works independently and serves as a resource for others; may precept new medical assistants and students.
  • Administers select medications and injections under direct supervision of the provider as per hospital or practice policy.
  • Assists in vaccination programs, including giving injections and tracking data in an approved database.
  • May assist with front desk operations, including patient check-in and check-out, scanning and filing, patient phone calls, and fee disclosures.
  • Enhances patient and family experience by informing of possible delays and addressing potential barriers to a positive experience.
  • Reviews business communication (e.g., In Basket, email, telecommunications) in a timely manner.
  • Plays an active role in compliance with regulatory and practice/hospital policy requirements.
  • Maintains a safe environment of care and reports safety concerns.
  • Participates in personnel skill and competency development and training as requested.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program required. Exceptions may be considered for:
    • 1 year of supervised work experience in a medical assisting field within the last 3 years; or
    • 2 years of supervised work experience in a medical assisting field within the last 5 years.
    Exceptions must be vetted by Human Resources Director and Department Director.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Previous experience working as a Medical Assistant in a primary care or ambulatory healthcare setting preferred.

Skills

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, clinical practices, primary care workflows, and applicable healthcare regulations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in obtaining and accurately documenting vital signs, medication and allergy information, and other patient data.
  • Experience performing routine clinical testing and assisting with injections, examinations, and minor office procedures.
  • Knowledge of appropriate cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization practices for clinical equipment.
  • Experience with electronic medical records; proficiency with Epic preferred.
  • Ability to accurately document and maintain patient information in the electronic medical record.
  • Knowledge of insurance verification processes and ability to obtain and verify patient insurance information.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally and compassionately with patients, providers, and care team members.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and organizational policies.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, accountability, sound judgment, and a commitment to quality patient care and service.
