UNC OB-GYN at Panther Creek offers complete gynecology and obstetric care. Our gynecology services include full screening and preventive care for women of all ages at all stages of their lives—from adolescence to family planning and pregnancy, through menopause. Our obstetricians and caring staff guide pregnant women through both routine and high-risk pregnancies. Focusing on prenatal care is vital to monitoring the progress of a pregnancy and identifying potential problems early. We also collaborate with midwives and provide full delivery and postpartum care. About the Role
The Medical Assistant II, Certified provides routine clinical and administrative support to providers and other health care team members in an outpatient clinic setting. Works under the clinical supervision of the provider for patient care activities, and under the general direction of the designated manager/supervisor.
Responsibilities
- Performs rooming and/or intake process, collecting and documenting data, including vital signs, height, weight, and data related to patient’s reason for visit.
- Collects patient and family data, including medical and social history.
- Reviews patient’s current medication list, allergies, and preferred pharmacy.
- Assists the provider as directed during treatments, examinations, and procedures.
- Collects specimens and performs phlebotomy.
- Administers medications under the direction of a provider.
- Performs tests, such as EKG and eye exams, under the direction of a provider.
- Reviews the patient record to determine whether the patient requires any routine health screenings.
- Ensures exam/procedure room contains appropriate supplies, equipment, forms, and educational materials and is ready for use during visit/procedure.
- Provides patient with after-visit, follow-up, self-care, or procedural instructions and/or educational materials as directed.
- Prepares, cleans, stocks, and maintains exam and treatment rooms.
- Cleans and sterilizes instruments.
- Assists with patient registration, check-in/check-out, appointment scheduling, and scheduling of tests, treatments, and referrals.
- Answers clinic telephone and assists in-basket under the direction of a provider or nurse.
- Assists in emergency situations as directed by a provider or nurse.
Additional Essential Responsibilities of a Certified Medical Assistant II may include:
- Precepts new medical assistant/credentialed medical assistant hires and medical assistant externs.
- Trains other medical assistants in clinic procedures.
- Assists the physician with maintaining preventive health measures for a panel of patients.
- Performs clinic-based quality or safety roles (e.g., clinic safety coordinator, maintains immunization or medication registry, performs medication or other required audits).
- Manages clinic supply ordering.
Requirements
- Requires Medical Assistant certification by either the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Health Career Association (CCMA), National Association of Health Professionals (NRCMA), or National Center for Competency Testing (NCMA).
- Basic Life Support Certification from American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required.
- Possess at least one year of full-time experience as a Medical Assistant, Certified.
- Demonstrate possession of the competencies outlined in the Medical Assistant, Certified Advancement Worksheet through application and interview.
Qualifications
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the position as outlined above.
- Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to engage positively with patients and families and to work as a team with staff and providers.
- Ability to use a computer to document required information into the electronic medical record.
Education
None required as long as other position qualifications are met. Completion of a Medical Assisting program accredited by either the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accreditation Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) is strongly preferred but not required.
Schedule
The work schedule expectations for this role will be 4 rotating 10-hour shifts Monday-Friday. Hours for each shift will typically be 6:45 am to 6:00 pm.
Pay
Salary range: $18.84 - $26.77 per hour (Hiring Range). Pay offers are determined by experience and internal equity.
