MEDICAL ASSISTANT I (TEMP - 6 MONTHS)

About the role

The Medical Assistant I is an unlicensed health professional primarily responsible for assisting patients throughout routine visits and helping with health management. This role works collaboratively with other healthcare members to provide comprehensive, quality, and accessible healthcare services under the supervision of a medical provider, RN, LVN, clinic operations manager, or clinic nurse manager.

Responsibilities

• Works closely with medical providers to deliver comprehensive healthcare to patients.
• Prepares for patient visits in advance, ensuring all labs, diagnostics, and hospital/ER discharge summaries are ready.
• Assists in providing clinical services, including taking vital signs, performing EKGs, immunizations, skin tests, vision and hearing tests, and blood draws; collects and prepares specimens as needed.
• Ensures complete, accurate, and timely documentation for all encounters, including vitals, health maintenance, records, screenings, vaccinations, medications, and questionnaires.
• Operates medical equipment such as electrocardiograms, audiometry devices, glucometers, spirometers, HbA1c meters, protime readers, pulse oximeters, and autoclaves.
• Administers vaccines and medications after verifying with an RN or medical provider, adhering to the five rights of medication administration and barcode scanning compliance.
• Follows vaccine funding sources (VFC, VFA, BAP, DPH) and protocols as applicable.
• Measures and describes TB skin test reactions, referring to RN/medical provider for interpretation.
• Prepares exam rooms before and after each patient in accordance with NEMS policy and OSHA guidelines, including restocking and sterilizing instruments.
• Assists providers during physical examinations, treatments, and procedures as requested.
• Assists in discharging patients, including reviewing office visit summaries, completing orders, providing patient education, and answering logistical questions.
• Arranges for hospital admission or ER visits as required.
• Makes appropriate referrals to other departments or outside agencies.
• Refers telephone or drop-in triage cases to a registered nurse or medical provider.
• Assists patients with ambulation and transfers (e.g., wheelchair, Stryker chair).
• Completes forms for various programs, such as authorization and referral forms.
• Tracks and follows up on patients with continuing healthcare needs, including health screenings (e.g., breast, cervical, colorectal cancer) and monitoring glucose and cholesterol levels.
• Rotates to other clinic sites or medical departments based on operational needs.
• Monitors and records refrigerator and freezer temperatures.
• Assists with interpreter needs for patients.
• Participates in achieving organizational goals, both clinical and CAHPS.
• Reports incidents promptly and accurately.
• Actively participates in mandatory training sessions.
• Reviews, responds to, or forwards patient portal messages to ensure completion.
• Performs other job duties as required by manager/supervisor.

Requirements

• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Medical Assistant certificate from an accredited school required.
• Documentation and completion of 160 hours of externship or 1 year of work experience as a Medical Assistant.
• Typing speed of at least 35 words per minute.
• Basic computer skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office and EMR (EPIC is a plus).
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Nevada Only: Laboratory License required.

Skills

• Fluent in speaking, reading, and writing English.
• Fluency in Chinese (Cantonese and/or Mandarin), Vietnamese, Spanish, or other languages may be required depending on location.
• Fluency in additional languages is an asset.
