About the Role

As a member of the health care team, the Medical Assistant provides support to physicians, nurses, and other licensed medical staff by facilitating efficient patient flow, assisting with patient care activities, and performing related administrative functions.

The Medical Assistant ensures efficient patient flow through the clinic, maintains neat and safe patient care areas, promotes patient satisfaction through professional and friendly interactions, and safeguards patient confidentiality.

Responsibilities

• Assures efficient patient flow through the site:
  • Escorts patients to exam rooms, identifies patients with 2 identifiers, and prepares them for examination.
  • Obtains accurate vital signs per organization standards.
  • Documents reason for visit and updates/confirms allergies, smoking history, and pharmacy information.
  • Informs the provider and registered nurse promptly of any significant changes in vital signs or acute symptoms.
  • Anticipates and sets up equipment or supplies needed for visits.
  • Cleans and prepares exam rooms for the next patient.
  • Responds to needs to expedite visits, maintains patient flow, and prioritizes tasks accordingly.
• Assists practitioners with medical and surgical procedures in accordance with established protocols, including:
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG).
  • Venipuncture.
  • Immunizations.
  • Setting up procedure trays.
  • Specimen collection and/or Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) waived testing as directed by the provider.
• Provides high-quality care by:
  • Preparing and stocking all exam rooms in the treatment area by following established protocols for disinfecting and sterilizing equipment and instruments.
  • Participating in environmental safety rounds.
  • Maintaining vaccine/medication inventory.
  • Monitoring and maintaining equipment and instruments according to clinic guidelines.
  • Assisting in ordering supplies and correctly disposing of expired items.
  • Adhering to office opening and closing procedures.
• Functions as an integral part of the patient care team and promotes patient satisfaction by:
  • Interacting with patients in a professional and friendly manner.
  • Accepting and performing delegated responsibilities positively.
  • Offering assistance to others.
  • Attending and participating in staff meetings.
  • Communicating appropriately and effectively with patients and the care team (in-person and on the phone).
  • Performing delegated procedures common to the specialty area safely, effectively, and efficiently.
• Performs all other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or Manager.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Current certification in one of the following or written proof of eligibility to take one of these certification exams (AAMA, AMT, NCCT, NHA, NRCMA):
  • New MA graduates within six months of graduation must submit a letter from the school or certifying body.
  • Non-certified MAs or graduates past six months must submit a letter from the certifying body.
  • Within the first six months of employment, must complete one of the following certifications after up to two test attempts:
    • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).
    • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologists (AMT).
    • National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
    • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
    • Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) through the National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP).
• Signed acknowledgment during onboarding that certification must be attained within six months as a condition of employment.
• American Heart Association accredited Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification.
• Zero to two years’ experience in a relevant role.
• Strong computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant training program.
• One to two years of ambulatory care experience.
• Experience with electronic medical records.
