This role works in an outpatient setting across different clinics, offering opportunities to experience specific patient populations.

Responsibilities

• Scheduling patients, obtaining pre-authorizations, registering patients, and gathering/analyzing payor data
• Performing basic medical screenings (vital signs, specimen collection, bladder scan, EKGs, etc.)
• Administering medications and vaccinations
• Providing wound care (suture/staple removal)
• Assisting providers with sterile and non-sterile procedures
• Splinting and bandaging

Personnel

Medical Assistants will work with RNs, LPNs, Nurse Practitioners (NPs), and Medical Doctors (MDs).

Requirements

• High School Diploma or passage of a high school equivalency exam
• Meets one of the following:
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant program and work experience in a Medical Assisting or acute patient care capacity (including school-sponsored externships)
  • Completion of a Medical Assisting-comparable military educational program for medics/hospital corpsman with an honorable discharge (if applicable)
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for the American Heart Association (AHA) or obtains within 90 days of hire
• Knowledge of basic medical procedures and medical terminology
• Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and ability to work with minimal supervision
• Ability to work in a stressful, fast-paced environment with multiple providers
• Basic computer and data entry skills
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
• Flexibility, initiative, and a strong work ethic
• Ability to work in assigned area(s) and any other clinic based on operational needs

Preferred Qualifications

• 6 months of clerical experience and experience related to patient care
• Active certification as a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA)
• One of the following:
  • 1 year of work experience in medical billing, patient registration, and/or patient scheduling
  • Education related to medical billing, patient registration, and/or patient scheduling from an accredited institution
  • Current certification as a Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA)
• Experience calculating proper dosage and administering specific medications (e.g., pediatric immunizations) and converting across measurement systems
• Experience performing point of care testing, CLIA waived testing, wound care, dressing changes, specimen collection, and phlebotomy
• Experience assisting with procedures and tests (e.g., pulmonary function tests)
• Experience with Epic In-Basket management

Physical Requirements

• May sit, stand, stoop, bend, and walk intermittently during the day; may need to sit or stand for extended periods
• Must see and hear in the normal visual and audio ranges with or without correction
• Ability to lift 250–300 pounds with assistance
• Ability to push/pull up to 500 pounds with assistance
• Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or body fluids
• Requires some exposure to chemicals and cleaning products
