Responsibilities

  • Engage in population-appropriate communication and demonstrate knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
  • Provide clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment and involve family/guardian in assessment, initial treatment, and continuing care.
  • Identify physical limitations of patients and deploy necessary interventions.
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.
  • Interpret population-related data and plan care appropriately, addressing unique psychological needs or those associated with religious/cultural norms.
  • Perform treatments, administer medication, or operate equipment safely.
  • Recognize and respond to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
  • Obtain vital signs, EKGs, laboratory specimens, and other necessary information for patient evaluation while adhering to universal precautions.
  • Assist providers in documenting notes, orders, and prescriptions in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Prepare and maintain the clinic area, including cleaning and stocking examination rooms, setting up and securing computer equipment, and maintaining diagnostic equipment.
  • Return routine patient telephone calls (e.g., prescription refills, pre-certification for medication) with timely documentation of actions taken.
  • Coordinate ancillary services such as diagnostic testing/imaging, hospital procedures/admissions, additional patient visits, and acquisition of medical records.
  • Maintain a positive, professional, and cooperative demeanor in all interactions with patients, staff, physicians, and management.
  • Ensure a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards, procedures, and legal regulations.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to legal responsibilities and requirements of the medical assistant role.
  • Seek knowledge and understanding of quality measures and patient experience.
  • Perform administrative duties, including:
    • Using computer applications.
    • Answering telephones and greeting patients.
    • Updating and filing patient medical records.
    • Coding and filling out insurance forms.
    • Scheduling appointments.
    • Arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services.
    • Handling correspondence, billing, and bookkeeping.
  • Assist in implementing age-appropriate care for specific patient populations, including direct patient care as part of the clinical team.

Requirements

  • Minimum Required: High School Diploma or GED.
  • Preferred: 7–11 months of equivalent experience.
