Principal Responsibilities
- Performs routine (noninvasive) patient care functions as prescribed by licensed health care personnel following established clinic policies and procedures within defined scope of education, training and responsibilities.
- Collections and records patient data including height, weight, BMI, temperature, pulse, respiration rate and blood pressure, pulse oximeter, and peak flow measurement. according to established policies and procedures
- Performs lab tests, including finger sticks, after appropriate training and verification of competency
- Administers immunizations and all medications per provider's order after a licensed health care professional verifies the correct medication and dosage
- Performs venipuncture and PPD skin placement. Documents measurement of PPD skin test and reports information directly to the provider or to the Registered Nurse
- Applies/removes bandages and dressings
- Provides basic health information and education to patients using established policies and procedures
- Performs routine clerical functions as assigned
- Schedules routine and follow-up appointments
- Accurately files all patients’ labs, X-ray, EKG results and other documents after the provider has seen and signed off the information
- Keeps patient exam rooms and work areas clean and stocked
- Maintains confidentiality at all times
- Participates in assigned staff and other meetings, including quality improvement, case conferences and in-service meetings
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records in the electronic health record (EHR) system
- Support patient flow and coordination in busy clinic environments, including walk-in and outreach-based services
- Provide trauma-informed, respectful care to patients experiencing homelessness, substance use, mental health conditions, and chronic illness
- Collaborate with medical, behavioral health, and case management staff to support holistic care plans
- Monitor inventory levels of medical supplies and report replenishment needs to clinic leadership
- Follow infection control and safety guidelines to maintain a safe clinical environment
- Support other JWCH clinic locations in the downtown area as assigned
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant school with a current MA certificate
- Verification of appropriate hours in approved Medical Assistant course to perform venipuncture
- Current BLS certificate from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Minimum of 2 years of experience providing direct patient care in a clinical or community health setting
- Phlebotomy certification/license preferred
- Experience with Electronic Health Records (EHR), particularly NexGen, preferred
- Ability to work effectively in fast-paced, high-volume environments with diverse populations
- Strong interpersonal skills with a commitment to trauma-informed, culturally competent care
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
- Flexibility to work at various clinic locations in the Downtown Los Angeles area as needed
- Must maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations
