About the Role
The Medical Assistant assists in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a physician. Works under close supervision of the physician and clinic manager.
Responsibilities
- Properly identifies patients by requesting name and date of birth prior to any interaction.
- Ensures confidentiality of protected patient health information by utilizing safe business practices that support HIPAA regulations.
- Completes and documents patient visit notes accurately, including chief complaint, past medical and surgical history, family history, vital signs, immunizations, allergies, medications, nutrition, and health and wellness issues.
- Accurately and safely administers and documents waived testing under the direct supervision of a physician.
- Prepares, stocks, and cleans exam rooms and maintains supplies and equipment for patient care.
- Prepares and administers medications according to physician/physician assistant orders and organizational policies.
- Assists the physician with minor surgical procedures and follows appropriate procedures for obtaining, handling, and processing specimens and cultures.
- Provides basic clinical care measures to all age groups per clinical skills checklist.
- Coordinates patient flow to ensure physician efficiency, including managing patient schedules and wait times.
- Instructs patients and/or families regarding diagnostic procedures, medications, nutrition, and health/wellness issues using pre-approved forms and information.
- Retrieves and sends requested patient health information to authorized individuals in a timely fashion in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
- Notifies patients of test results, medication changes, and treatment plan alterations within 48 hours as instructed by the practitioner.
- Calls in medication prescriptions to pharmacies as ordered by the physician/practitioner per organizational policies.
- Coordinates diagnostic testing as ordered by the physician/practitioner and communicates with other healthcare providers regarding patient care.
- Responds to questions and concerns from patients and/or families appropriately.
- Understands and adheres to corporate compliance procedures, accrediting body standards, and ethical and religious directives when providing care.
- Understands potential chemical hazards and how to access MSDS information.
- Takes correct and prompt actions during emergency situations and documents events in the electronic safety system.
- Participates in quality improvement initiatives, including gathering and trending data and supporting process changes.
- Observes and adheres to all policies and procedures, following safety, quality assurance, and infection control standards.
- Utilizes equipment, supplies, facilities, and resources efficiently to ensure high-quality healthcare services.
- Assumes responsibility for continuing education and professional development.
- Works closely with other medical assistants to ensure compliance and competency in documentation standards.
- Assists with oversight of regulatory processes, including monitoring logs and measuring compliance in the clinic.
- Assists with counting and ordering vaccines, medications, and clinical supplies.
- Performs medical record auditing of clinical documentation and works with management to improve documentation strategies.
- May provide training and orientation to new team members on policies, procedures, and clinic workflow.
- Works closely with the health information management department to provide clinical documentation for auditing.
- Uses initiative to assist in overall operations of the practice, including clerical duties as needed.
- Supports practice efforts such as annual Flu Clinics, job-site projects, and community health events.
- May assist with clerical duties such as answering phones, filing, preparing charts, managing referrals, verifying benefits, and coordinating paperwork for patient needs (e.g., FMLA or back-to-work/school messages).
Requirements
- Completion of a medical assistant program or 1 year of experience in a clinical capacity.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Computer literate; skilled in the use of Microsoft Outlook, electronic health records, and other software programs.
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required.
