About the role
Working under the provider’s direction, you will provide general nursing functions for the Hand & Elbow Surgery practice at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Battle Creek. Responsibilities include recording vital signs, immunizations, initial patient assessment, obtaining concise patient history, and providing clinical information and support to providers. You will also process and post information to patient charts, educate patients and families regarding medications, treatments, care, and referrals.
Responsibilities
- Prepare patients for examination, including assessment, histories, vital signs, medication reconciliation, and routine testing (hearing, vision, etc.).
- Document pertinent information in patient charts and maintain documentation standards.
- Review charts prior to appointments to ensure requests and documents are in place.
- Administer treatments as requested by the physician.
- Obtain specimens for urine testing, phlebotomy, and other laboratory tests as directed.
- Perform laboratory tests as directed by the physician and accurately document results.
- Set up and assist physicians with procedures (e.g., laceration repair, pap/pelvic exams).
- Schedule outside tests or procedures (e.g., x-ray, MRI) and prepare patients by providing instructions.
- Coordinate admissions, referrals, and prescription calls.
- Stock exam rooms with supplies and conduct daily inventory.
- Assist in scheduling appointments in the EMR system and screen calls for urgency.
- Complete miscellaneous patient forms (e.g., Worker Compensation, Disability).
- Attend staff, educational, or other required meetings.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by nurses, practice manager, or physician.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must meet one of the following:
- Successful completion of an accredited medical assistant program.
- CMA/CCMA/RMA certified.
- Meet eligibility requirements to take CMA/RMA and obtain certification within 6 months of hire.
- BLS certification required within 90 days of hire/transfer.
- Knowledge of clinical skills as required with Medical Assistant Certification/Registration.
- Effective problem-solving and prioritization skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
- Ability to work independently and as an integral team member with healthcare professionals.
- Personal computer skills with EMR experience highly desirable.
- Ability to input and retrieve data from computerized systems.
- Work involves considerable standing or walking, regular lifting of light-weight objects (up to 20 pounds), and assisting with heavier tasks such as moving patients.
- Must be able to maintain alertness and concentration for sustained periods, including interactive and repetitive tasks.
