Pay

$40.79 - $52.03 per hour. The compensation offered will depend on the candidate's educational background, skills, and professional experience.

About the role

The Blood Bank Medical Technologist performs routine and complex patient/sample pre-analytical and post-analytical compatibility tests using automated and non-automated methods, proficiency tests, quality control, and preventative maintenance per established policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex analytical testing on patient specimens with accuracy, precision, and efficiency under the direction of a pathologist.
  • Provide accurate and reliable analytical results necessary for the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies, reagents, and blood products.
  • Maintain non-analytic equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, cell washers, and centrifuges.
  • Perform and provide compatibility tests for patient blood transfusion needs as per established standard operating procedures.
  • Effectively manage and utilize the blood and blood product inventory.
  • Assist with the preparation and collection of quality control/assurance data reports and performance of quality audits as assigned.
  • Ensure quality clinical laboratory testing by performing the correct test on the right person at the right time, producing accurate test results with the best outcome in the most cost-effective manner.
  • Exhibit effective patient and customer service skills with adherence to core values and mission of the hospital.
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding and working knowledge of advanced Transfusion Service concepts, including interpreting group types, antibody screening and panels.
  • Recognize and evaluate results relative to the immune response expected for each age group.
  • Perform all Transfusion Service procedures as outlined in the SOP manual when needed.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with Transfusion Policies by troubleshooting policy problems and assisting other staff members.
  • Document all deviations on an event report when necessary.
  • Perform tests correctly with no technical errors, completing all available samples, including routine crossmatches, received no later than one hour prior to the end of the shift.
  • Print BBLIS pending log for test completion.
  • Resolve antibody ID problems by correctly identifying antibodies and finding compatible blood for transfusion.
  • Prepare components such as aliquoting Packed Red Cells, thawing Fresh Frozen Plasma, pooling Cryoprecipitate, and preparing multiple units of Platelets or Single Donor Platelets; label prepared components correctly.
  • Irradiate and label blood and blood components correctly.
  • Interpret the results of all Quality Control tests, ensuring accurate specimen handling, identification, and storage.
  • Collaborate effectively as a team member within the department, fostering positive communication, cooperation, and quality service delivery.
  • Train and mentor new staff or students as needed, promoting professionalism, lab excellence, continuous learning, and adherence to best practices.
  • Participate in accreditation readiness, audits, and quality improvement initiatives to strengthen laboratory performance.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned to support laboratory operations and patient care.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Science (required).
  • Two to three years of clinical lab experience (preferred).
  • ASCP or equivalent certification (preferred).

Schedule

Part-time, rotating weekends and holidays.

Skills

  • Ability to perform tests correctly with no more than 4 uncorrected minor clerical errors, such as:
    • Not entering appropriate result comments (e.g., for DAT test and ABID).
    • Not returning units in the BBLIS or returning units that are crossmatch/directed to available status.
    • Not crossmatching directed/hold units to a patient with antibodies.
    • Not entering results into the BBLIS.
    • Recording wrong result (no clerical errors which would affect patient care).
