MED LAB SCIENTIST

About the Role

Performs therapeutic and diagnostic laboratory test procedures, operates laboratory equipment, reports results, and performs other assigned duties. Participates in quality management and accreditation activities. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, including understanding principles of growth and development and identifying patient requirements relative to age-specific needs. Has knowledge of age and gender-specific reference ranges and uses that knowledge in the performance and verification of patient test results.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate the ability to use various computer programs in addition to the EMR system.
• Multitask within and between laboratory sections.
• Apply critical thinking abilities in evaluating test results.
• Operate and maintain various pieces of laboratory equipment.
• Microscopically identify hematology cell lines, cell inclusions, and body fluid components.
• Microscopically identify yeast, parasites, and differentiate gram-positive/gram-negative bacteria.
• Perform manual test procedures.
• Perform serological testing for blood types, crossmatch, and prepare blood products.
• Communicate effectively with others in an appropriate and timely manner.
• Adhere to and promote established organizational values, including customer service, safety, infection control, and compliance standards.
• Follow FGH policies, procedures, and standards of care consistently.
• Participate in department meetings, education/training, and meet established deadlines for completion.
• Maintain a safe and clean environment within the clinical area in accordance with established standards and regulations.
• Use professional judgment and critical thinking skills.
• Adhere to all work policies and work independently with minimal supervision, making clinical decisions in an orderly and functional manner in a challenging environment.

Requirements

• B.S. in Medical Technology (aka Medical Laboratory Science) or equivalent required.
• MLS (ASCP) certification or equivalent credentials.
