About the Role
The Certified Medication Aide administers oral and topical medications to patients/residents as ordered by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed nurse, and in accordance with state and federal rules and regulations. This role also involves performing routine daily tasks to maintain the health, comfort, and well-being of patients/residents.
Qualifications
- State certification as a Nursing Assistant (mandatory).
- State-approved medication administration certification (where required).
- Ability to read, write, and speak the English language.
Responsibilities
- Administers medications as ordered by a physician under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with state and federal regulations and facility policy.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the "five rights" of medication administration.
- Takes and records vital signs of patients/residents as assigned or as required by certain medications.
- Records the administration of medications and/or treatments appropriately.
- Observes for and reports any reactions and/or side effects of medications to a licensed nurse or the appropriate shift.
- Administers PRN medications in accordance with state and federal regulations and consistent with facility policy.
- Documents reason for and response to PRN medications in a timely manner.
- Dispenses narcotics and accounts for them under the supervision of the licensed (or charge) nurse per facility policy.
- Properly secures medication carts/medication rooms per state and federal regulations and facility policy.
- Attends facility education in-services.
- Makes observation rounds under the supervision of the licensed nurse (or charge nurse) on the shift.
- Supervises nursing assistants/orderlies as assigned by the charge nurse on the shift.
- Ensures that medication rooms, med carts, and medication refrigerators are kept clean and well organized.
- Removes expired medications for destruction per facility policy and procedures.
- Attends Quality Assurance meetings as requested.
- Functions as a Team Leader/Role Model.
- Reviews and enforces Cantex Continuing Care Networks Clinical Policies and Procedures for Abuse Prevention.
- Assures patient/resident safety.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
