Mechnical Design Checker (Engineering Technologist 2/3)
This position is open for external candidates only and will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 2 or 3 level, depending on the selected candidate’s skills. Additional responsibilities will apply if hired at the higher level.
About the Role
The Weapon Product Definition (E-11) Group seeks a mechanical designer to serve as a full-time checker of design definition. The role requires expertise in 3D Computer Aided Design, hardware design, fabrication, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), and engineering concepts.
Responsibilities
- Work with weapon engineers, designers, and management to ensure product definition release meets requirements and design standards.
- Check Creo models and drawings for form, fit, and function, including Models Based Definition (MBD).
- Conduct tolerance and stack analyses, ensuring compliance with the most recent design standards.
- Ensure product definition meets requirements, supports producibility, and reduces rejected products.
- Recommend best practices or methods of improvement for MBD while maintaining compliance with NNSA, LANL, and industry standards.
- Apply ASME Y14 standards, with emphasis on Y14.5 - 2009 and Y14.41 MBD.
- Develop and interpret 3D CAD model standards, practices, and procedures for conveying design intent internally and across the National Security Enterprise (NSE).
- Support hardware fabrication, inspection, and assembly processes.
- Manage weapon-system configuration workflows for authorization, review, release, and distribution of models, drawings, specifications, and related product definition.
- Lead design, manufacture, assembly, and test reviews.
- Collaborate with teams of engineers, physicists, scientists, technologists, and technicians in product development.
Engineering Technologist 3 Additional Responsibilities:
- Guide diverse teams through design iterations to address potential engineering defects.
- Supervise aspects of others’ work while performing own tasks with minimal direction.
- Provide technical solutions to complex and unique problems using ingenuity, creativity, and independence.
- Train junior staff on Models Based Definition and GD&T.
Requirements
- Intermediate to advanced understanding of Computer Aided Design (CAD).
- Experience with mechanical CAD, manufacturing, inspection, assembly, and testing.
- Proven experience with Creo 3D CAD software and PDMLink Product Lifecycle Management (PLM).
- Proficiency in GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis software.
- Familiarity with ASME Y14 standards, particularly Y14.5 - 2009 and Y14.41 MBD.
- Knowledge of hardware fabrication, inspection, and assembly processes.
- Experience with weapon-system configuration management workflows.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work on multiple tasks for diverse customers while ensuring product definition meets requirements and design intent.
Qualifications
Engineering Technologist 2:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math, or related field and 5 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Engineering Technologist 3:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Science, Math, or related field from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Advanced professional experience in all minimum job requirement categories.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in draft/design work in both weapons and non-weapons arenas.
- Experience developing and implementing organizational design and/or drafting standards.
- Previous model/drawing checking experience in the Nuclear Security Enterprise.
- Active Q clearance.
Pay
- Engineering Technologist 2: $96,600 - $158,000
- Engineering Technologist 3: $106,400 - $176,000

Work Location
This is an onsite position located in Los Alamos, NM. Work locations are at the discretion of management.
