The Advanced Technologies (AT) group researches, designs, and develops innovative new nuclear reactors, nuclear rocket propulsion systems, and radioisotope production systems for both internal and external customers.

The Mechanical System Design Supervisor will provide direct day-to-day supervision and technical leadership for a team of engineers who are matrixed to support projects. Primary activities include planning and tracking of team member work assignments; working with the team to ensure effective execution of work; and overseeing delivery of work products that meet specified quality and technical requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Build a supportive and collaborative team culture.
  • Plan, direct and coordinate the timely execution of assigned activities, which includes tracking assignments of team members (including contractors) and setting task priorities.
  • Ensure team members have the resources to perform their assignments.
  • Ensure work is performed in accordance with applicable procedures and policies and is consistent with accepted engineering standards and specified requirements.
  • Assist team members with technical problem solving.
  • Facilitate resolution of issues that involve other disciplines/teams.
  • Develop team members through training, mentoring, feedback, and work assignments.
  • Work with team members to identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships across the Engineering organization and with other interfacing BWXT organizations and external partners/stakeholders.
  • Monitor performance goals and provide feedback to team members.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree is required.
  • Must have at least five (5) years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Must have at least five (5) years of leadership/supervisory experience.
  • Must have demonstrable ability to forge effective working relationships up, down, and across an organization.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • If required, must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Supervisory, project engineering, or project management experience.
  • Familiarity with high temperature gas reactor technologies.
  • Familiarity with the requirements of quality programs such as ISO 9001, AS9100 and/or NQA-1.
  • Experience in the application of Agile methods for new product development.
  • Experience working with U.S. Government customer (e.g., DOD, DOE, NASA).

Pay

The base salary range for this position in Virginia (US-VA) at the start of employment is expected to be between $86,000.00 and $136,000.00 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations.

Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits.

This is an on-site position in Lynchburg, VA at the Advanced Technologies Office.
