About the role

Perform simple repair work to clean, check, inspect, repair, maintain, and install station equipment and apparatus.

Responsibilities

General Duties

  • Be knowledgeable of and follow all safety rules, procedures, and practices.
  • Direct the training of other employees in correct operating procedures, either in conjunction with supervision or individually as directed.
  • Report to assigned locations for training and actively participate in training activities.
  • Carry out assignments in training for and/or performing fire fighting and first aid.
  • Exhibit adequate competency in activities delineated in the Duties and Qualifications sections, demonstrated through job performance and training/testing programs.
  • Watch for and promptly report any damaged or defective equipment or conditions that may cause damage or injury.
  • Perform duties of lower or higher classifications incidental to the job and within capabilities, including those needed for training in higher classifications.
  • Keep all equipment, tools, materials, and work areas in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Report as directed to any facility for any shift where needed.
  • Perform work in a responsible and cooperative manner to facilitate a positive working environment.
  • Compile information and generate reports, forms, and documents as required.
  • Represent the Company to the community with attention to the highest standard of conduct, appearance, and attitude.
  • Be loyal to the Company and support its policies, procedures, and objectives.

Specific Duties

  • Perform simple work to check, inspect, repair, maintain, and install station equipment and apparatus.
  • Assist employees of higher classification by supplying necessary tools, equipment, and material; gather and return all such items in a clean and serviceable condition upon job completion.
  • Clean equipment undergoing repairs, handle and move materials, supplies, and equipment; maintain the work area in a clean and safe condition.
  • Perform simple dismantling and assembly work, including bolting/unbolting, wire brushing, reconditioning, and cleaning parts.
  • Learn and operate hand tools, power tools, hoists, drill presses, grinders, and other tools and equipment pertaining to the work as directed.
  • Learn oxy-acetylene cutting and simple arc-welding.
  • Prepare work surfaces and areas, remove and install insulation, guards, and housings on equipment.
  • Set up portable extension lights and blowers as directed.
  • Obtain refractory brick and tile, prepare mortar mix for furnace repairs, and assist in masonry work as directed.
  • Remove covering and insulation, prepare surfaces for recovering, mix mortar, and install same.
  • Assist in simple electrical and instrument repair.
  • Clean oil coolers, oil filters, condensers, and other station equipment.
  • Learn operation of equipment such as cranes, backhoes, tractors, and vacuum trucks.
  • Assist in lubricating station equipment.
  • Operate vehicles for transporting personnel, tools, materials, and equipment as assigned.
  • Assist in the erection and removal of scaffolding and rigging.
  • Assist employees of any classification in carrying through work assignments as directed.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications for Entry

  • Meet all general qualifications of employment.
  • Ability to speak, understand, read, and write English, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Education or knowledge equivalent to satisfactory completion of high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to learn to use tools and equipment required in the work.
  • Willingness to become familiar with and comply with Company Safety Rules.
  • Possess a valid state driver’s license and pass the Transportation Department’s driver’s test for operating Company vehicles.
  • Willingness to work inside and outside under varying weather conditions.
  • Willingness to report as directed to any facility for any shift where needed.
  • Good health and ability to perform physical requirements of the job, including work at heights and heavy manual labor.
  • Willingness and ability to acquire necessary knowledge and skills to advance to higher classifications.
  • Ability to communicate through both verbal and written reports.
  • Ability to learn to make and read simple drawings and sketches.
  • Ability to obtain cooperation and satisfactory work from others assigned to work with him/her.
  • Successfully complete entry-level testing programs measuring job-responsive aptitude, ability to retain knowledge, and problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to satisfy all attendance criteria adopted by the Company pertaining to this classification.
  • Employees who job bid into this classification must have satisfied all attendance criteria adopted by the Company.
