About the role

We are seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer to join our team, contributing to NASA’s deep space exploration missions and delivering systems that inspire global innovation. In this role, you will collaborate with a diverse and passionate team to design, develop, and implement engineering solutions that support human spaceflight and benefit life on Earth.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze customer requirements and develop design solutions in a team environment.
  • Design, develop, test, implement, and analyze technical products and systems, with a focus on thermal vacuum space simulation testing.
  • Produce engineering drawings conforming to JPR 8500 and other applicable standards.
  • Troubleshoot facility systems or components and instruct technicians on repair solutions.
  • Collaborate with NASA Pressure Systems to complete Pressure Systems Design Reviews.
  • Prepare and present designs at various engineering design reviews.
  • Prepare work authorizing documents (WADs) to support hardware installation in human-in-the-loop vacuum/thermal vacuum chambers.
  • Apply engineering principles to solve equipment, building, and infrastructure challenges.
  • Prepare engineering specifications, statements of work, and cost estimates for facility-related projects.
  • Manage all phases of procurement, inspection, fabrication, and installation into facilities and test chambers.
  • Coordinate and lead Mechanical Engineering designers, stress engineers, and drawing checkers to complete detailed fabrication drawings.
  • Demonstrate leadership, motivation, and organization while working within a closely-knit team.
  • Oversee and direct technicians during installation or fabrication of engineering products.
  • Maintain configuration control for all project phases.
  • Develop designs based on Concept of Operations or established requirements in a fast-paced environment.
  • Interpret and modify Process and Instrumentation Drawings (P&ID).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with experience in the field or a related area.
  • Ability to visualize and work with complex mechanical systems as part of a team.
  • Experience coordinating in a team environment to meet project milestones, design reviews, and integration.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite, MS Project, AutoCAD, Inventor, Creo, or similar CAD software.
  • Familiarity with reliability, availability, and maintainability (RAM) principles.
  • Experience with Liquid Nitrogen, Helium, and Oxygen Systems.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines with limited supervision.
  • Ability to work in a Thermal Vacuum Testing environment, including potential shift work to cover Test Operations.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to build relationships and work proactively in a team.

Qualifications

  • 5 years of experience in a related engineering role is desired.
  • 5 years of direct work with ASME B31.3 Process Piping and ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessels is desired.
  • Presentation skills are required.
  • Familiarity with Johnson Space Center (JSC) organizations, processes, and procedures is a plus.
  • Experience developing and maintaining project schedules (MS Project/Smartsheet) is a plus.
  • Experience with NASA’s Engineering Drawing System Manual, JPR 8500.4, is a plus.
