We are looking for a talented Mechanical Engineering Technician to join our team specializing in Engineering at our Cummins Inc. facility in Columbus, IN.

About the role

In this role, you will make an impact by:

  • Conducting performance and reliability testing on multiple and single cylinder engines, components, systems, and controls; performing diagnosis of engines, components, systems, controls, and test cell problems and initiating appropriate resolutions.
  • Configuring and operating data acquisition systems; analyzing and reviewing data for appropriateness; writing computer programs to assist in analysis and data interpretation; configuring engine test programs; interpreting results, making necessary adjustments; documenting, defining data collected, and maintaining electronic files.
  • Performing rig, engine and component builds, tear down, and inspections.
  • Grading and measuring components.
  • Creating sketches for machining and fabricating necessary piping, tubing, and brackets from prints and drawings.
  • Installing engines and instrumentation of engines and components in test cells and test rigs.
  • Using common tools such as Calterm, Asset, Cyflex, etc.
  • Designing, documenting, and executing test plans; providing input during the creation of test plans; preparing test reports to include findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Understanding and applying appropriate company and department rules and guidelines to work.
  • Working with and training apprentices and technicians.
  • Interfacing with customers, suppliers, engineers, and other functions.
  • Coordinating programs including planning, scheduling, ordering, and tracking.
  • Participating in the maintenance of quality procedures.
  • Leading and participating in improvement projects.
  • Developing and giving presentations to customers and suppliers.
  • Knowing and complying with all safety policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrating confidentiality as required.
  • Participating in self- and team-audits and associated corrective action.
  • Performing other miscellaneous duties, as required, to get the job done.

  • Product Function Test System Design - Interprets test equipment specifications from test standards or lab customer requirements; selects and integrates appropriate equipment, instrumentation, and software to control boundary conditions and collect measurement data; assesses capability of the lab equipment against the requirements and support infrastructure.
  • Test Setup and Configuration - Interprets test plan to determine optimal location and orientation within a test space in accordance with local safety and environmental requirements and fabricates required system with appropriate materials.
  • Test Article Build - Assembles test articles according to test requirements, including all necessary installation or accommodations for instrumentation, in a manner that allows the test articles to successfully undergo product functional test.
  • Preventative and Predictive Maintenance - Interprets machine and tool maintenance records and data to develop and execute preventative and predictive management strategies to drive continuous improvement within the manufacturing process.
  • Data Quality - Identifies, understands, and corrects flaws in data that supports effective information governance across operational business processes and decision making.
  • Problem Solving - Solves problems and may mentor others on effective problem solving by using a systematic analysis process leveraging industry standard methodologies to create problem traceability and protect the customer; determines the assignable cause; implements robust, data-based solutions; identifies the systemic root causes and ensures actions to prevent problem reoccurrence are implemented.

Qualifications

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required with Department of Labor Certification OR Associates degree from an accredited program in a related field and at least two years of relevant experience OR Bachelors degree in a related field. Must pass all related testing.

Schedule

This is a 4x10-hour shift, Monday through Thursday, 2:00 PM to 12:00 AM.

  • Actively participate in daily 5S efforts.
  • Maintain a clean, neat, orderly, and productive workspace.
  • Maintain daily test cell and work order logbooks.
  • Consistently run daily Test Readiness Verification (TRV).
  • Consistently update Multi-State Utilization (MSU) Board.
  • Consistently review/approve timecard.
  • Maintain good relations, communication, and a spirit of collaboration with customers and cross-functional departments.
  • Maintain engines on test.
  • Complete all mandatory training by required deadlines.
