MECHANICAL ENGINEER SKILLBRIDGE INTERN (PLANT OPERATIONS
U.S. Citizenship is required for this position. This role is a full-time, 1st shift opportunity at Newport News Shipbuilding, with no relocation assistance, telework, or travel requirements.
About the Role
This is an UNPAID internship through the Hire Vets Now (HVN) SkillBridge Program for transitioning active-duty US military personnel. HVN SkillBridge Internships provide real-world experience during the final 180 days of active-duty service. The intern will train on meaningful projects, work closely with a mentor, and engage with senior company leadership. The program focuses on placing transitioning military into roles that align with their existing knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs), education, and military training, with potential transition to full-time permanent employment.
Responsibilities
As a Mechanical Engineer, you will:
- Research, plan, design, and develop mechanical products and systems, including instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines, and mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, or heat transfer systems for energy production, transmission, measurement, and use.
- Apply research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and machines.
Requirements
- Must be active-duty military within the final 180 days of service (candidates can apply within the final 12 months of service).
- Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program (required by Newport News Shipbuilding).
- Education and experience requirements are dependent on the Program of Instruction.
