Mechanical Engineer II
About the role
Working within Bio-Rad's Clinical Diagnostics Group R&D organization as a Mechanical Engineer, you’ll take engineering concepts and requirements and transform them into functional prototypes and finished products that improve healthcare outcomes for people around the world.
Responsibilities
- Develop fluidic subsystems and consumable interfaces, performing detailed characterization of flow dynamics, waste, and volumetric budgets.
- Support end-to-end system platform and prototype development through experimental testing, component selection, control software development, and automated fluidic integration.
- Build and utilize breadboard fixtures and prototypes to validate designs, execute system testing, and troubleshoot fluidic and electromechanical issues involving analysis of instrument logs.
- Maintain a strong laboratory presence, designing experiments and generating high-fidelity datasets to guide design tradeoffs and risk mitigation.
- Foster effective collaboration with vendors and cross-functional engineering teams.
- Define, document, and execute fluidic requirements, engineering specifications, and technical reports.
- Lead/participate in Design for Excellence (DFX) approach to Product Development.
- Build and cultivate a results-oriented culture of innovation, empowerment, risk tolerance, learning and continuous improvement across the group.
- Build and maintain effective cross-functional collaborations within Bio-Rad and with external partners.
- Work closely with the R&D and Engineering Leadership teams to drive and continually expand the functional excellence of the entire engineering team through mentorship and training.
Requirements
- Education/Work Experience: BS in Mechanical Engineering, MS preferred with 2-5 years experience.
- Experience working with fluid handling and pneumatic systems.
- Experience with internal and outsourced product development projects.
- Experience with good engineering practices, tools, and processes, including DFMEA, Six Sigma.
- PREFERRED TOOLS: Flow Modeling - Ansys, COMSOL; CAD Modeling - SolidWorks etc.; Statistical Tools - Minitab; Rapid prototyping and fabrication skills desirable.

Pay
The estimated base salary range for this position is $99,600 to $132,900 at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be provided in writing at the time of offer, if applicable, and is based on several factors we believe fairly and accurately impact compensation, including geographic location, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other job permitted factors.
Schedule
This position is eligible for a variable annual bonus, which is dependent upon achievement of your individual objectives and Company performance.
