MECHANICAL ENGINEER.

About the Role

This position involves reviewing previous projects, plans, applicable codes, and new developments in industrial processes and equipment. You will analyze system demands, determine capacities, operational parameters, environmental and safety criteria, and maintenance requirements.

Responsibilities

• Perform detailed engineering studies, tests, and evaluations of manufacturing systems, including gas and liquid flow analysis, heat transfer, piping and structural assembly, stress analysis, and system performance.
• Prepare manufacturing drawings, supporting calculations, and specifications.
• Direct and advise other engineers and technicians in the design, review, and specification of industrial support facilities and plant equipment.
• Plan, research, develop, layout, and coordinate additions, renovations, and alterations to existing facilities and equipment.

Requirements

• Must wear personal protective equipment (e.g., helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators, safety shoes) continuously during work shifts.
• Work is performed in areas with potentially harmful physical and chemical agents (e.g., fumes, dust, heat, radiation, chemicals).
• Must participate in medical surveillance programs.
• Must perform occasional sea duty and travel, including remote or isolated sites, on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods.
• Must access nuclear work areas and perform physical tasks such as walking on uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, climbing vertical ladders, and standing for long periods.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a Professional Engineer. This experience should include applying technical knowledge in the design, installation, maintenance, operations, or evaluation of systems to solve problems and furnish technical advice.

Education

Applicants must meet the following basic education requirements:

• Successful completion of a professional engineering degree from a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
• Alternatively, a degree that includes differential and integral calculus and courses in five of the following seven areas: statics, dynamics; strength of materials; fluid mechanics, hydraulics; thermodynamics; electrical fields and circuits; nature and properties of materials; or any comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics.
• Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico.
• Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board.
• Completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences that meet the requirements of an engineering program.
• A bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field (e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology) may be accepted if the applicant has at least one year of professional engineering experience under professional supervision.
