Mechanical Engineer
About the role
The Mechanical Engineer will assist with development, management, and implementation of capital projects, major repairs, maintenance projects, and provide process engineering support. This role involves developing technical solutions—including automation—to address recurring equipment, productivity, and process-related problems identified through data analysis.
Responsibilities
- Lead automation and other capital projects, including equipment specification and qualification, cost justification, PEHSRs, leadership of contracted and internal resources, and implementation into manufacturing operations.
- Participate in long-range process and facilities planning, capital expenditure, and cost savings programs.
- Provide engineering innovations to improve process control, product quality, and business productivity, and assist in developing a strategic plan to increase automation use.
- Maintain knowledge of current and new technologies to identify opportunities for implementation in manufacturing operations.
- Participate in improving equipment safety through involvement with safety teams and ASAT ownership.
- Act as a technical support resource for equipment troubleshooting and problem-solving.
- Demonstrate effective workload balance and project management skills for multiple simultaneous projects.
- Work independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
Physical requirements: Must be able to sit or stand at a computer workstation 25% of the time, walk in steel-toed, metatarsal boots 75% of the time, and wear required PPE (hard hat, hearing protection, and safety glasses) 100% when in the mill. Must be able to change priorities frequently without losing momentum and comprehend and implement new information.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technologies from an accredited institution.
- Some mechanical engineering experience and knowledge of engineering fundamentals.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States; verification of employment eligibility required at hire. Visa sponsorship is not available.
- This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), requiring U.S. person status (U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident, Political Asylee, or Refugee).
Preferred Qualifications
- 5 or more years of experience in heavy industry, especially in a maintenance or engineering role.
- Ability to engage with employees at all levels of the organization.
- Project management experience.
- Attention to detail and ability to rapidly respond to project demands and problems.

Pay
Base Salary Range: $75,000.00 - $110,000.00
