About the role

Individuals in this classification perform engineering calculations and must layout and design systems in accordance with established policies, standards, and procedures, exercising judgment with minimal supervision. They apply practical knowledge and experience to resolve project-related problems and conflicts, capable of independent decision-making for assigned engineering tasks. Occasionally, they may supervise subordinate personnel or assist other engineers or designers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and minimum 3 years of experience (EIT preferable).
  • OR an associate degree with minimum 5 years’ experience in the design of HVAC and/or Plumbing systems under the supervision of a Professional Engineer.

Responsibilities

  • Attends preliminary job meetings and helps evaluate scope of work.
  • Independently prepares or directs preparation of system layout, detail drawings, schematics, and specifications with minimal supervision.
  • Performs calculations and designs engineering systems.
  • Provides technical information and assistance to project engineers or team leaders, including feasibility recommendations for systems or equipment and product evaluations.
  • Assists in final plan checking and responds to RFIs, code comments, and permit issues with code officials/AHJ.
  • Resolves construction conflicts and answers questions from contractors and bidders.
  • Coordinates design work with other disciplines and contacts utility personnel for mechanical and electrical utilities coordination.
  • Reviews shop drawings for conformance to plans and specifications.
  • Performs job site inspections to ensure installations meet plans and specifications.
  • Completes project “punch lists” and assists in resolving conflicts between owners and contractors.
  • Mentors Engineering Designers I and II.
  • Meets fast-paced deadlines while maintaining quality design.
  • Handles additional duties as required, including responding to RFIs and submittals.

Work Environment

Must handle stressful situations, multitask, and work within reasonable time constraints to meet production schedules and budgets. Work occurs in a normal office environment but may occasionally require work outside of a typical office setting.
