Mechanical Designer/Engineer
Job Summary
Mazzetti is seeking a mid-level Mechanical Designer/Engineer based in the greater Sacramento or San Francisco Bay areas to join our healthcare practice to contribute fully to the analysis, design and documentation of mechanical/HVAC systems for large and complex healthcare projects. Engineers in this role take ownership of system design from concept through construction, working collaboratively with senior engineers, architects, and multidisciplinary teams.
Core Responsibilities
- Mechanical Design & Engineering
- Design HVAC and mechanical building systems for commercial, institutional, healthcare, and other complex facilities.
- Perform engineering analyses, calculations, equipment selections, and system studies.
- Prepare construction documents, including plans, specifications, schedules, and technical documentation.
- Cookordinate mechanical systems with architectural, structural, electrical, plumbing, and specialty disciplines.
- Review engineering drawings and specifications for quality, constructability, code compliance, and technical accuracy.
- Apply applicable building codes, industry standards, and Mazzetti quality expectations throughout project delivery.
- Project Delivery
- Collaborate with project managers, architects, engineers, contractors, vendors, and clients throughout all phases of project delivery.
- Participate in project planning, multidisciplinary coordination meetings, and design reviews.
- Support construction administration by responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, participating in site visits, and resolving technical issues during construction.
- Contribute to successful project delivery by supporting schedule, quality, and client expectations.
- Team Collaboration
- Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams across Mazzetti offices.
- Share technical knowledge and collaborate with engineers and designers throughout the organization.
- Participate in quality control reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Mentor junior staff as experience allows.
Work Location
This is a hybrid position based in either the San Francisco or Sacramento, CA areas, involving primarily working from home, client site visits throughout Northern California, and occasional presence in our San Francisco or Sacramento offices as needed for project collaboration and team-building activities.
Travel Requirements
Approximately 10–15% travel, primarily within the Northern California region based on project assignments.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent mechanical design experience.
- 2+ years of mechanical engineering or mechanical design experience within the AEC consulting industry.
- Demonstrated experience designing HVAC and mechanical building systems for commercial, institutional, healthcare, or other complex facilities.
- Experience coordinating with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Experience preparing construction documents and supporting projects through construction.
- Healthcare experience, particularly hospitals and medical office buildings (MOBs), is preferred but not required.
- Experience working on HCAI (formerly OSHPD) projects is strongly preferred.
Technical Expertise
- Strong knowledge of HVAC and mechanical building systems.
- Thorough understanding of applicable building codes and industry standards.
- Proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and mechanical load calculation software.
- Experience preparing engineering calculations, equipment selections, specifications, and construction documentation.
- Familiarity with sustainable, resilient, and high-performance building design principles.
- Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
Licenses & Certifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in California preferred but not required

- Compensation: The typical salary range for an Mechanical Designer / Engineer in the greater Sacramento or San Francisco Bay area is $62,000 - $150,000. We are committed to equitable pay and will evaluate final compensation based on relevant experience and skills in alignment with internal equity and market data.
