The Mechanical Designer also interfaces with suppliers and provides hands-on support to manufacturing and assembly operations to ensure high-quality, cost-effective, and manufacturable solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Own component modification activities, including review and implementation of proposed cost reduction modifications.
  • Review sourcing and supplier quotes to evaluate cost reduction ideas, cost impact, and manufacturability limits.
  • Develop cost Pareto models to identify and prioritize high-impact cost reduction opportunities.
  • Perform mechanical design of hardware, with a focus on gas turbine components and related systems.
  • Create and refine 3D models and detailed drawings, ensuring accurate model and drawing definition.
  • Generate and maintain product lifecycle management (PLM) bills of materials (BoMs) and change instructions.
  • Coordinate hardware procurement and support manufacturing and assembly processes for modified components.
  • Collaborate with PDE drafting, sourcing, AME manufacturing, aero engineers, heat transfer specialists, MPE materials, repair engineering, and value engineering teams.
  • Interface directly with suppliers to review design concepts, cost reduction proposals, and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Provide shop floor support by dispositioning non-conformances and assisting with production-related issues.
  • Support supplier qualification processes and review supplier deviation requests (SDRs).
  • Track modified parts through final assembly and into fleet launch to ensure successful implementation and performance.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Proven experience in mechanical design, preferably with gas turbine components or similar complex hardware.
  • Strong proficiency in 3D modeling and drafting, including creation and modification of detailed models and drawings.
  • Hands-on experience with product lifecycle management (PLM) systems, including BoM creation and change management.
  • Solid understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) and its application to detailed mechanical drawings.
  • Ability to develop and interpret cost Pareto models and other cost analysis tools to support cost reduction initiatives.
  • Experience working with bills of materials and managing configuration and documentation for mechanical components.
  • Capability to work cross-functionally with engineering, manufacturing, sourcing, and repair teams to drive design and process improvements.
  • Effective communication skills for direct interaction with suppliers and internal stakeholders regarding design, cost, and manufacturability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Four-year engineering degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline; candidates with strong, aligned experience will also be considered.
  • Experience using Siemens NX or similar advanced CAD software for mechanical modeling and drafting.
  • Familiarity with ANSYS Mechanical or comparable analysis tools for mechanical simulations and evaluations.
  • Understanding of gas turbine components, aero and heat transfer considerations, or related turbomachinery applications.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing and assembly environments, including shop support and non-conformance disposition.
  • Ability to participate in supplier qualification processes and review supplier deviation requests (SDRs).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail in evaluating cost, quality, and manufacturability trade-offs.

Work Environment

This role operates in a manufacturing work environment that uses state-of-the-art equipment and tools to support advanced mechanical design and production activities.
