Mechanical Design Engineer: Battery Design
About the Role
We’re hiring a Mechanical Design Engineer with an emphasis on lightweight battery pack design, thermal management, performance testing, and bringing battery designs from concept to product release. This role is part of the Meta Robotics Hardware team, focused on consumer humanoid development. You’ll work in a high-ambiguity environment where full system requirements are seldom known, contributing to hardware that enables learning through data collection and testing.
Responsibilities
- Mechanical engineering and packaging for lightweight, swappable battery technology, prioritizing reliability, safety, and weight.
- Plan and execute performance, validation, endurance, and lifecycle testing.
- Troubleshoot root causes of mechanical failures, implement design improvements, and validate changes.
- Lead contract manufacturers (CMs) and scaling partners to enable high-volume production as projects mature.
- Collaborate with the reliability team to implement best practices for high-reliability mechanical and electrical design.
- Build subsystem test fixtures, design tests, create test plans, perform tests, analyze data, and refine design assumptions.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams (EE, SW, Firmware) to deliver complete technical solutions.
- Design battery docking and interface components, as well as other humanoid robot systems as needed.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience in Mechanical Design Engineering.
- BS degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Experience with lightweight custom battery development and thermal management of batteries/electronics.
- Experience with DOEs, performance, and validation testing.
- Proficiency in SOLIDWORKS, Siemens NX, or similar CAD tools.
- Experience with prototyping manufacturing processes and materials.
- Ability to manage time-sensitive projects through completion while balancing evolving priorities and stakeholders.
- Experience in tolerance analysis, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
- Experience in Finite Element Analysis (FEA), including static structural and modal analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in robotics and consumer electronic product design.
- Ability to drive and lead projects from concept to completion.
- Demonstrated ability to integrate AI tools to optimize workflows and drive measurable impact (e.g., efficiency gains, quality improvements).
- Experience adhering to and implementing responsible, ethical AI practices (e.g., risk assessment, bias mitigation, quality/accuracy reviews).
- Ongoing AI skill development (e.g., prompt/context engineering, agent orchestration) and staying current with emerging AI technologies.
Pay
$173,000/year to $245,000/year + bonus + equity + benefits. Individual compensation is determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
