Mechanical Design Engineer
About the role
The Design Group is the central resource within Dominion Engineering, Inc., an Allied Power company, that performs equipment, tooling, and product design. Engineers within the Design Group work within and collaborate to improve established design, drafting and release processes.
Responsibilities
- Translate customer and project requirements into design specifications for assigned project responsibilities.
- Design, develop, and release components and subsystems under the supervision of Project Coordinators and the Engineering Design Director.
- Create and maintain engineering documentation, including but not limited to 3D models and 2D drawings, calculations/design notes, and bills of materials.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure assigned work is completed from concept to launch.
- Understand and evaluate capabilities, strengths, and compromises for common mechanical components (e.g., pumps); select components based on quantitative technical evaluations (e.g., pump curves).
- Participate in collaborative brainstorming and design review sessions. Provide and accept feedback based on technical merit in a professional atmosphere.
- Enthusiasm for peer group mentoring with other Designers/Engineers within the Design Group, encouraging consistency and high quality of work product.
- Subject to company and project needs, the Design Engineer may be called on to perform other functions suited to his/her expertise, including but not limited to:
- Acting as an Individual Contributor on non-design tasks related to his/her design work (e.g., writing procedures, operating instructions, generating figures, etc.).
- Inspection of received components, fit up, first time assembly for projects where design authority was assigned.
- Reporting and disposition of deviations and corrective actions related to assigned designs.
- Supporting internal business initiatives.
Requirements
- Strong understanding and demonstrated proficiency with: Engineering first principles: Statics, Dynamics, Strength of Materials
- 3D Part and assembly modeling (Solidworks CSWP or equivalent experience)
- 2D Drafting
- Experience with prototype fabrication and standard manufacturing processes.
- Excellent problem-solving skills as well as organization and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
- Comprehensive familiarity with fabrication/manufacturing techniques
- Knowledge of costs, lead times, and associated tradeoffs.
- Able to identify process gaps and propose/contribute to continuous improvement efforts.
- Able to articulate ideas and abstract concepts with clear written and verbal communication.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent technical experience and a minimum 5 years of engineering experience.
- SolidWorks CAD Design Professional (CSWP) – Mechanical Design or equivalent demonstrated proficiency.
- Experience designing and building tooling and equipment for industrial applications (minimum 3 years).
Skills
- Comprehensive understanding of nuclear work environment and the unique design challenges/requirements thereof
- Knowledge of ASME BPVC, ASME Process Piping (B31), Y14.5 GD&T, Y14 Engineering Drawing Practices, AWS Welding, traditional manufacturing methods and associated DFM, 2D CNC – waterjet/laser cutting, 3D CNC – multi axis milling / lathe turning, sheet metal design, weldments / welding, additive manufacturing and DfAM (FDM/SLS/MJF), dimensional inspection/Reverse Engineering: 3D Scanning / CMM / Hand tools
