About the role

Seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to support a short-term surge in engineering activities across multiple autonomy integration programs. These engineers will play a key role in designing and integrating autonomous vehicle hardware onto existing off-road vehicle platforms, including military and commercial ground vehicles. The primary effort involves developing SolidWorks-based designs that integrate autonomy systems with an AM General vehicle platform. A second project will focus on kit development and mechanical integration design for autonomous vehicle solutions. This position is ideal for a hands-on mechanical engineer who enjoys working on ruggedized vehicles, autonomous systems, and electromechanical assemblies in a fast-paced R&D environment.

Responsibilities

  • Create detailed mechanical designs, models, and drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Design and integrate autonomy hardware, sensors, computing systems, brackets, enclosures, mounts, and supporting structures onto off-road vehicle platforms.
  • Support development of autonomy-ready vehicle kits and subsystem integration packages.
  • Perform concept development, packaging studies, and design trade-off analyses.
  • Generate fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, and bill of materials (BOMs).
  • Work closely with robotics, electrical, software, and systems engineering teams.
  • Participate in design reviews and support prototype builds.
  • Interface with manufacturing and fabrication resources to ensure designs are practical and manufacturable.
  • Support installation, integration, and testing activities on prototype vehicles.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical integration issues during vehicle builds and testing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • 5-10+ years of mechanical design experience.
  • Strong proficiency with SolidWorks in a product development environment.
  • Experience designing mechanical systems for vehicles, mobile equipment, robotics, autonomous systems, military platforms, heavy equipment, or industrial machinery.
  • Experience creating manufacturing drawings and assemblies.
  • Understanding of GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, and design for manufacturing (DFM).
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-moving engineering environment.
  • Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Project environment

The selected engineers will support the company's growing portfolio of autonomy solutions for off-road and military vehicle applications. Current efforts involve integration of autonomous technologies onto rugged vehicle platforms operating in challenging outdoor environments.

Work arrangement

  • Preferred: Onsite in Warrendale/Pittsburgh, PA
  • Hybrid schedule available for strong candidates
  • Candidates within approximately one hour of the facility are strongly preferred
  • Occasional hands-on work in vehicle integration and testing environments
