Mechanical Design Engineer 2/3
About the role
The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a skilled Mechanical Design Engineer to join the Engineering Services (ES) Division. The role supports the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission by contributing to the implementation of the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program.
Responsibilities
Assess and analyze the condition of existing facilities and infrastructure systems.
Apply engineering judgement to engineering challenges and provide subject matter expert opinions.
Develop design scopes, estimate design efforts, and produce construction contract documents.
Generate written recommendations, adhere to LANL’s Engineering Standards, Conduct of Engineering, prevailing codes and standards, and ensure compliance.
Interface and coordinate with project stakeholders, foster timely coordination between all design disciplines, and engage third-party resources such as Sustainability and Commissioning.
Provide reviews of outside A/E designs, review construction submittals, respond to RFI’s, generate document revisions, and ensure timely engagement of third-party resources.
Make visionary organizational contributions regarding design and business practices, facilitate technical growth of the mechanical design team, assist Team Lead with work planning, staffing projections, and hiring.
Requirements
Advanced experience in design and principle of operation in both mechanical and plumbing facility systems.
Expert application of building codes, standards, and green initiatives related to facilities design.
Advanced experience creating construction contract documents for commercial and/or industrial facilities.
Ability to support construction execution, including timely review of submittals, requests for information, design changes, aid in non-conformance issues, validation of commissioning documentation, and produce accurate as-built documents.
Expert ability in preparing calculations, application of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to facility and operations-based engineering challenges.
Expert ability to apply engineering judgement to facility and operations-based engineering challenges.
Ability to manage, prioritize, and communicate workload and tasks.
Qualifications
Minimum of 3 years of practical work experience in engineering design and principle of operation of infrastructure systems.
Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable.

Pay
Salary range for Mechanical Design Engineer 2: $106,400 - $176,000
Salary range for Mechanical Design Engineer 3: $128,000 - $215,900
Schedule
Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
