Supervise Engineers and mechanical designers, conduct peer reviews, ensure quality assurance, lead complex project work, manage personnel development and succession planning, teach and mentor, plan and distribute work, manage the group toolbox, and drive continuous improvement of standards, toolboxes, and workflows.
Responsibilities
- Work in compliance with all health and safety rules and regulations; report hazards or infractions.
- Ensure designs meet applicable safety codes and advocate safe behavior.
- Provide level-of-effort estimates for proposal submissions.
- Adhere to Cementation Engineering design standards.
- Attend technical conferences and seminars to represent Cementation’s capabilities and expand knowledge.
- Participate in marketing or bid meetings to address project scope and technical capabilities.
- Monitor department workload, forecast needs, and maintain group viability.
- Collaborate with Project Services and Operations to produce safe, operable, and constructible designs.
- Assess group availability, arbitrate priorities, and assign work appropriately.
- Develop employees, align career aspirations with pathways, and manage training budgets.
- Conduct annual performance assessments.
- Maintain a balanced range of experience within the group and ensure long-term succession planning.
- Manage engineering software and hardware needs, including licenses, interoperability, and budget.
- Review industry developments in software/hardware and mitigate risks to maintain technical capability.
- Develop and maintain discipline-specific standards, including specifications, templates, and workflows.
- Identify long-lead procurement items and coach engineers on technical documentation and project schedules.
- Provide expert opinions during tender, fabrication, and manufacturing periods.
- Attend design review meetings and answer questions related to design basis and criteria.
- Recommend system types/styles at the conceptual stage and collaborate on design selection.
- Establish drawing layouts to ensure engineers’ requirements are conveyed adequately.
- Ensure compliance with codes, standards, and regulations through calculations and filing.
- Provide coaching on mechanical system/component selection and calculations.
- Ensure the group uses the most current versions of codes, standards, and regulations.
- Participate in design reviews to ensure safe, efficient, and operable plant designs.
- Monitor projects for operability, constructability, and risk assessments.
- Complete timely review and markup of drawings, collaborating across disciplines.
- Conduct code and math checks of own work and others’ work as required.
- Monitor peer reviews of designs and calculations for compliance and best practices.
- Conduct peer reviews of complex projects.
- Assess and provide technical recommendations for field inquiries during construction.
- Enforce Change Management principles for field solutions, respecting scope, budget, and schedule.
- Monitor project close-out to ensure client and Cementation requirements are met.
- Coach engineers on project close-out documentation and compliance.
- Develop and manage a monitoring program for mandated tests, inspections, and measurements.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervise all Engineers and Direct Reports within the discipline, including Specialist Engineers.
- Provide technical review of work, monitor adherence to working hours, and ensure compliance with standards.
- Direct, review, approve, and stamp the work of Engineers in Training.
- Oversee, check, and stamp the work of Engineering Interns or counter-stamp work in other jurisdictions.
- Assess worker performance, provide feedback, and enforce company policy through disciplinary action.
- Participate in recruiting by preparing candidate requirements, interviewing, and managing probationary periods.
- Check and approve timesheets of direct reports.
- Manage and approve group vacation and flex schedules in collaboration with Project Managers.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution or equivalent.
- Master’s or Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering considered an asset.
- Registered as a licensed Professional Engineer (single or multiple states).
- Experience in discipline-specific design of medium to large underground and heavy industrial infrastructure.
- Previous experience managing medium-sized engineering groups.
- 15 to 20 years of relevant experience.

- Mechanical engineering analysis software: Nastran, ANSYS, Pipe-Flo, AFT Fathom, CAESAR II, Compress, PV Elite.
- MS Office Suite, MS Project, Primavera, Hard Dollar.
Schedule
Occasional travel to project sites and offices, ranging from one day to several weeks, including overseas assignments.
