Mechanical Assembly Technician
Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Research Manufacturing Group is seeking a Mechanical Assembly Technician to support multiple enrichment technology programs. This role resides within the Enrichment Systems Fabrication and Demonstration Section, part of the Isotope Science & Engineering Directorate, and contributes to advancing enrichment technologies and exploring enriched stable isotope production and applications.
About the role
As part of our team, you will collaborate with technicians, engineers, quality representatives, project managers, and other staff to deliver high-quality manufactured components and assemblies. This position requires a strong understanding of precision manufacturing, mechanical and electro-mechanical fabrication and assembly techniques, interpretation of mechanical drawings and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T), mechanical testing, inspection, and quality control.
Responsibilities
- Fabrication, assembly, and testing of components for various enrichment technology systems.
- Assist in developing procedures and process improvements.
- Participate in research and development activities related to gas centrifuge technology.
- Assembly, disassembly, and troubleshooting of custom and commercial fabrication equipment.
- Apply Conduct of Operations principles, including working under procedures, work orders, manufacturing plans, and quality & inspection plans.
- Utilize engineering and shop drawings for parts fabrication.
- Work collaboratively to meet project milestones and deliverables.

Requirements
- An AS degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience OR a High School Diploma and a minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience. Comparable combinations of education and experience will be considered.
- Mechanical aptitude and hands-on experience in fabrication and assembly.
- Manufacturing experience in an R&D and/or production environment.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Proficiency with standard and advanced equipment, computer systems, and software programs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced research environment.
- Experience setting priorities to accomplish multiple tasks under deadlines.
- Active DOE Q clearance.
- Experience with isotope enrichment technologies or related programs.
- Experience working under a Quality Assurance Program (e.g., NQA-1, ISO9001, AS9100).
- Understanding and application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ANSI Y14.5.
Special Requirements
- Occasional overtime and limited-term shift work may be required to support mission needs.
- A pre-hire physical will be required after offer due to varying physical demands and working conditions.
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance, including passing a pre-placement drug test and participating in an ongoing random drug testing program (Workplace Substance Abuse Program).
