About the role
Performs all equipment and facilities related electrical, mechanical, sheet metal, welding, instrument, and pipe fitting work. Utilizes process and maintenance knowledge to assist in planning and performing tasks. Participates in teams to develop and implement solutions. Respects potential hazards within the manufacturing operation and participates in training and regular auditing of the process.
Responsibilities
- Follow Energy Control Procedures (ECP's) and Lock Tag Try (LTT) system.
- Apply safe rigging procedures and operate a forklift (licensed; certification provided).
- Troubleshoot PLC systems using a laptop to diagnose issues with limit switches, photo eyes, timers, and clear PLC faults.
- Analyze problems to identify root causes and reduce cycle time to resolution.
- Understand and apply World Class Manufacturing (WCM) concepts, key business metrics, and manufacturing principles for shingles.
- Install, modify, or maintain plant equipment and determine appropriate methods for tasks.
- Read, understand, and analyze blueprints and technical data references.
- Use hand and power tools expertly; inspect equipment to identify potential problems before breakdowns.
- Follow environmental compliance policies and programs; maintain clean work areas.
- Work with outside contractors as instructed.
- Perform mechanical machining tasks: boring, keyways, drill press, grinding, lathe and mill operation.
- Precision align belt, gear, or direct coupled shafts to specified tolerances.
- Understand lubrication principles, bearing tolerances, and hydraulic/pneumatic systems, including flow principles, pressure drops, and proper fittings.
- Apply knowledge of pump basics, conveyor belt physics, and belt tracking, including bucket elevators and splicing.
- Read air and power fluid schematics; perform basic welding (structural and piping) and pipefitting (alignment, flange, threading).
- Understand basic electrical components (solenoids, motors, heaters, contacts, photo eyes) and troubleshoot ultrasonic rotating equipment.
- Read schematics, P&ID drawings, and understand fusing, thermal overload protection, wire sizing, motor theory, and AC/DC/servo drive systems.
- Safely conduct motor control and power circuit troubleshooting, including fuse sizing, motor amp readings, and basic DC motor control.
- Troubleshoot variable frequency drives (DC and AC) and communicate technically with outside support.
- Understand control loops, including IM/APC systems and weight control equipment; apply electrical noise avoidance techniques (grounding, shielding).
- Troubleshoot and tune burner systems in compliance with plant rules.
- Comply with all safety regulations and maintain a clean, orderly work area.
Requirements
- Minimum two years of plant experience or demonstrated capability to troubleshoot major plant systems (e.g., Filler coating system, Slate system, Poly wrap).
- Fluent in the language of the plant.
- Computer literacy: email, spreadsheets, word processing.
- High School diploma or equivalent; pass the Maintenance Test with at least a 2nd Class score.
- Ability to work independently or in a team with minimal supervision, demonstrating drive and high-quality output.
Skills
- Basic computer skills.
- Electrical, PLC, hydraulic, and pneumatic knowledge.
- Basic blueprint and schematic reading.
- Proficiency in SAP PM Module.
- Basic welding skills.
- Ability to think under pressure and make quick decisions.
- Strong attention to detail.
Education and/or Experience
- Preferably five years in a related maintenance trade or occupation involving electrical, hydraulic machinery, and equipment in a manufacturing environment.
- Demonstrated troubleshooting techniques and basic understanding of blueprints.
- Basic knowledge of welding practices and hydraulic circuitry.
- Advanced understanding of electrical circuitry.
- Basic PLC knowledge with ability to interpret written, oral, diagram, or schedule instructions.
- Ability to work with large industrial machines independently or in a team.
Essential Physical Requirements/Work Environment
- Ability to perform repetitive hand, arm, and leg movements for several hours.
- Ability to climb on and off a forklift; stand for 10–12 hours straight.
- Ability to climb and descend stairs for up to 12 hours continuously.
- Capable of lifting and pushing/pulling 50 lbs more than 100 times per day.
- Ability to squat, bend at the waist and knees freely.
- Exposure to temperature extremes, uncomfortable noise levels, and bending/twisting.
- Capable of handling, controlling, or feeling objects, tools, or controls; performing repetitive movements.
