About the role

The locomotive mechanic will primarily conduct locomotive mechanical and electrical maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting, ensuring that the rail equipment needs are supported and maintenance work is completed timely, efficiently, and safely.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory railroad rules and regulations for safety and operations.
  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair malfunctions in diesel engines, air brake equipment, electrical equipment, running gear, or locomotive components.
  • Weld and use a cutting torch to repair or modify locomotive equipment.
  • Perform periodic inspections and interpret oil sample results.
  • Conduct daily inspections and locomotive servicing.
  • Maintain locomotive inventory and a clean, safe work environment.
  • Read electrical schematics and troubleshoot low and high voltage AC/DC circuits.
  • Obtain and maintain DOT certification and physical.
  • Operate forklift, truck crane, and manlift proficiently.
  • Travel for training, repairs, and maintenance at other facilities.
  • Maintain filing system for record keeping and use the Manager Plus program for work orders, inspections, and inventory.

Requirements

  • Preferably 3 years’ experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing EMD locomotives.
  • Self-starter capable of working independently in line with company goals, strategies, and policies.
  • Familiarity with EMD 90 and 190 manuals and ability to develop relationships with material vendors.
  • Problem-solving skills and familiarity with locomotive maintenance.
  • High school diploma or equivalent and a current/valid driver license.
  • Rail industry experience is a must.
  • Possess hand tools including metric and standard wrench sets, socket sets (1/4”, 3/8” & ½” drive with ratchets), pliers, channel locks, screwdrivers, and a multimeter with extension leads.

  • Ability to work with team members and follow instructions.

  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and industrial environments, including remote rail lines.
  • General computer skills.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • On feet for extended periods and walking long distances daily.
  • Exposure to harsh weather, uneven ground, ladders, racks, and other high places.
  • Potential work sites include industrial rail facilities and remote rail lines with slick, icy, or uneven ground.
  • Ability to lift and maneuver components up to 50 lbs.

Pay

$25.59 to $34.94 per hour. Overtime after 8 hours.

Schedule

Monday to Friday.

Location: Delaware City, DE. The candidate will be subject to a 90-day probationary period.
