Mechanic Journeyman

About the Role

Performs a variety of general (HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, etc.) and preventative maintenance on hospital facilities and equipment, as well as related new construction and renovation work.

Responsibilities

• Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives; adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
• Conducts group training sessions and on-the-job practice for other maintenance staff.
• Ensures that time and material records of self and others within the assigned team are complete, accurate, and submitted to the supervisor/coordinator at the end of each shift.
• Maintains necessary tools to perform required maintenance work at all times.
• Maintains relationships with various vendors relating to building maintenance and renovation projects.
• Oversees teams of mechanics in the completion of building maintenance and renovation projects.
• Performs preventative and corrective maintenance on plumbing, electrical, chlorine systems, fire extinguishers, oxygen & vacuum systems, grounds, laundry, elevators, and building systems.
• Provides backup maintenance support for zone work and completes repair orders as necessary.
• Provides working leadership for other maintenance staff in building maintenance projects.
• Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions and failures, determines necessary repairs, and initiates work orders.
• Works from blueprints, schematic diagrams, and sketches; uses basic mathematics and estimates work requirements.
• Participates in meetings, committees, and community outreach efforts; represents the department and hospital in service improvement teams.
• HVAC: Diagnoses, repairs, and installs systems using blueprints, codes, specifications, and industry standards. Directs multi-craft teams in mechanical/electrical maintenance, renovation, and new equipment installation projects.
• HVAC: Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration systems, electrical controls, pneumatic control systems, and piping systems.
• HVAC: Trains and develops lesser-skilled personnel through small group sessions and on-the-job practice.
• Plumber: Corrects leaks, sewage stoppages, and equipment malfunctions; cuts, bends, threads pipes; fits threaded pipes with adjoining assemblies.
• Plumber: Develops material and cost estimates for plumbing components of renovation projects; installs and repairs medical gas lines in patient and operating rooms.
• Plumber: Installs, renovates, and reconfigures plumbing systems; maintains inventory of replacement parts and supplies; performs asbestos removal.
• Plumber: Repairs and overhauls pumps, heat exchangers, coils, valves, and associated equipment on steam systems or boilers.
• HVAC/R: Assists other trades in electrical, plumbing, carpentry, etc.; learns, operates, and troubleshoots the hospital’s computerized DDC building automation system.
• HVAC/R: Maintains OEM specifications and related parts inventory; performs troubleshooting, repairs, replacement, and new installation of HVAC/R systems.
• HVAC/R: Completes all PM compliance documentation in established time frames using CMMS Program via iPad.
• Electrician: Diagnoses, repairs, and installs systems using blueprints, codes, and specifications; maintains low voltage systems (e.g., fire alarm, card access, nurse call).
• Electrician: Ensures circuits are properly protected, motors have appropriate starting circuits, and ground fault circuits are functional.
• Electrician: Inspects, repairs, and performs safety tests on electrical lighting, emergency generators, alarm systems, communication systems, medical equipment, and HVAC systems.
• Electrician: Maintains records for costing work assignments; mounts motors, transformers, and lighting fixtures; completes circuits according to diagrams.
• Electrician: Measures, cuts, threads, and installs electrical conduit; splices wires and pulls wire through conduit; connects wiring to fixtures and power equipment.
• Electrician: Installs grounding leads; operates and maintains high voltage switchgear; performs or directs electric circuiting work, including new branch lighting and life safety circuits.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED (or equivalent).
• Completion of acceptable training or demonstrated competency in board areas.
• 3-4 years of related experience.

Qualifications

• Journeyman License (JL) required; specific license/certifications based on area of work.
• Electrician: Journeyman Electrician license (JOURELEC) preferred.
• HVAC/R: Maryland State HVAC/R Journeyman’s License and CFC Universal Certification required.
• Plumber: Journeyman Plumbing license required; Master Plumber license (MASTERPLUM) preferred.
• Basic math skills, including fractions.
• Verbal and written communication skills.
• Basic computer skills preferred.

Pay

This position has a hiring range of USD $28.76 - USD $48.96 per hour.
