Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, air brake, suspension, steering, and air conditioning systems on school buses and district vehicles.
- Perform preventive maintenance inspections and required 30-day inspections in accordance with NCDPI guidelines.
- C Conduct North Carolina school bus inspections and maintain inspection records.
- Repair and replace engines, transmissions, brakes, differentials, starters, alternators, and other major components.
- Troubleshoot wiring, lighting, camera systems, GPS equipment, and related electrical systems.
- Operate shop equipment including lifts, welders, air tools, diagnostic equipment, tire machines, and forklifts.
- Maintain accurate work orders, labor records, and parts inventory documentation.
- Assist with roadside service calls and emergency breakdowns.
- Drive tow trucks, fuel trucks, or service vehicles when required.
- Support safe shop operations and maintain compliance with OSHA and NCDPI safety standards.
- Train or assist Mechanic I employees and other transportation personnel as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of diesel and gasoline engine repair.
- Knowledge of school bus operations, maintenance procedures, and NCDPI regulations.
- Ability to diagnose complex mechanical and electrical issues.
- Ability to read and interpret repair manuals, schematics, safety rules, and technical documents.
- Skilled in the use of diagnostic software and computerized maintenance systems.
- Ability to maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
- Ability to communicate effectively with drivers, supervisors, and staff.
- Ability to safely operate school buses and support vehicles.
Minimum Qualifications
- A high school diploma or GED required.
- Preferred training in diesel mechanics, automotive technology, or related field.
- Three to five years of experience in vehicle or diesel repair preferred.
- Experience working on school buses or heavy-duty vehicles preferred.
- ASE certifications preferred.
Special Requirements
- A valid North Carolina CDL Class A or B license with appropriate endorsements preferred or ability to obtain within required time frame.
- Must obtain and maintain NCDPI School Bus Inspector Certification.
- Ability to obtain tanker, passenger, and school bus endorsements.
- Ability to work flexible hours and respond to emergency breakdowns when needed.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift heavy parts and equipment up to 75–100 pounds.
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to work around fumes, oils, noise, and moving mechanical equipment safely.
