About the role
The Town of Farmville Public Works Department is accepting applications for the position of Mechanic I (Utilities).
Responsibilities
- Perform maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of mechanical and electrical systems, including pumps, motors, variable frequency drives, motor starters, SCADA systems, valves, generators, and treatment plant equipment to ensure efficient operation.
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on Town buildings, facilities, utility systems, and public properties.
- Maintain HVAC systems, perform filter changes, inspect building systems, and address general facility maintenance needs to ensure safe and functional public buildings.
- Install and upgrade mechanical systems and components, including piping, fittings, and control systems, in accordance with engineering specifications and safety standards.
- Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance to minimize downtime and extend the lifespan of equipment, facilities, and infrastructure.
- Respond to emergency equipment failures, electrical interruptions, building maintenance issues, and weather-related events to restore services safely and efficiently.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, inventory, and completed work orders.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations, including OSHA standards, confined space procedures, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Collaborate with utility operators, engineers, contractors, and other municipal staff on maintenance activities and system improvements.
- Monitor and maintain inventory of parts, tools, and supplies necessary for repairs and maintenance operations.
- Assist with snow removal and other emergency operations during inclement weather events.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED; completion of a vocational or technical program in mechanical systems, industrial maintenance, or a related field preferred.
- Must possess a valid Driver’s License with a satisfactory point balance of +3 or better; Class B CDL preferred or willing to obtain CDL within 1 year of hiring.
- Must have a minimum of one to three years of experience in facilities maintenance, construction, mechanical maintenance and repairs, preferably in water, wastewater, and/or electrical control.
Skills
- Knowledge of general building maintenance.
- Knowledge in diagnosing and repairing mechanical and hydraulic systems.
- Knowledge of electrical systems, plumbing, and welding is an asset.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
- Operate a variety of equipment, including dump trucks, bucket trucks, crane trucks, loader/backhoe, and forklifts.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, work in confined spaces, and perform tasks in various weather conditions.
- Must be able to stand, bend, and climb for extended periods.
Availability
Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and on-call shifts for emergency repairs.
Pay
Hiring salary $37,408 dependent upon experience and qualifications.
