Mechanic Heavy Equipment (Traveling) - Belen, NM

About the role

We are one of the largest U.S. railroads transporting essential products and materials across 28 western states and 3 Canadian provinces. As a Mechanic Heavy Equipment (Traveling) at BNSF, you will play a crucial role in maintaining and repairing critical machinery to ensure operational efficiency and safety.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair the fleet of equipment operated by BNSF.
• Disassemble, repair, modify, manufacture, overhaul, and troubleshoot roadway maintenance equipment.
• Operate equipment and use a variety of manual, electric, pneumatic, and hydraulic tools to perform necessary maintenance and repairs.
• Work in a safety-sensitive environment with diverse and extreme weather conditions, uneven surfaces, loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.
• Engage in daily safety conversations and adhere to safety regulations, rules, and policies.

Requirements

• Able to work now and in the future without BNSF’s assistance in obtaining, maintaining, or extending employment authorization.
• 21 years of age or older.
• Able to work in diverse and extreme weather conditions, on uneven surfaces, around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.
• Able to meet the travel requirements.
• Able to read, write, and communicate in English.
• Able to lift and carry up to 60 lbs occasionally.
• Possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsements or able to obtain one within 60 days of employment.
• Able to visually distinguish colors and discriminate verbal communication.
• Two years minimum verifiable mechanical work experience or training.
• One-year minimum of verifiable training and/or experience working with gasoline and diesel engines on large, industrial equipment.
• Three months minimum of verifiable training and/or experience with electrical and/or gas welding.
• One-year minimum of verifiable training and/or experience with electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic diagrams and schematics.
• Able to use hands and hand tools to perform activities involving holding, grasping, turning, and pulling.
• Able to climb ladders, get on/off equipment, and work from various heights.
• Able to bend, lift, walk, stand, and sit for extended periods.

Qualifications

• Union membership with the International Association of Machinists (IAM).
• Seniority district transfers handled per union agreement, based on seniority and requiring Director approval.

Pay

The monthly pay rate for a new hire Traveling Mechanic is approximately $8,726.19. On average, employees starting out as new hire Traveling Mechanic will earn $104,714.28 to $112,629 per year. Depending on business needs in your location or district, earning potential could grow to $136,000+ depending on hours worked and other factors.

Schedule

This is a full-time position with shifts Monday through Friday (10-hour shifts), with overtime after ten hours. Ongoing shifts may include nights, on-call, weekends, overtime, and holidays.
