About the role
We are looking for hard-working, reliable, and safety-minded individuals to join our team as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. In this role, you will perform timely and effective maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of various brands and types of heavy mobile equipment, including forklifts, bobcats, loaders, and material handlers. Work includes electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical diagnostics, parts inventory and ordering, report writing, and scheduling. This position works outside in varying weather conditions, and SA Recycling strictly adheres to all Metals Recycling Business Health, Safety, and Environmental standards.
Responsibilities
- Conduct basic to moderately complex diagnostic, troubleshooting, service, and repair tasks for fuel, electrical, mechanical, brake, cooling, and hydraulic systems on a wide range of mobile equipment.
- Complete routine maintenance tasks (oil and filter changes, lubrication, brake service, etc.) on all heavy mobile equipment per manufacturer and SA Recycling recommendations.
- Replace worn or defective parts, including disassembling and reassembling major components like power trains and crawler heads.
- Overhaul and test major systems, including engines, transmissions, and hydraulic systems, to ensure operating efficiency.
- Maintain accurate service records on all work performed.
- Conduct routine maintenance, such as cleaning and lubrication, and schedule future maintenance to prevent breakdowns.
- Order and maintain spare parts inventory.
- Weld broken parts, fit bearings, and align frames and gears.
- Keep detailed records of all maintenance and repairs performed on the equipment.
- Interact with yard General Managers to schedule routine or emergency maintenance or repairs.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and orderly working area.
- Use assigned vehicles, equipment, and tools safely and properly.
- Conduct safety inspections and ensure equipment is operating efficiently and safely.
- Troubleshoot and find solutions to complex equipment problems.
- Perform all tasks fully within SA Recycling’s Safety and Environmental practices and procedures.
- Perform preventive maintenance (PM) on forklifts, bobcats, heavy equipment, loaders, and material handlers.
Requirements
- Vocational/Technical degree highly desired.
- Proficiency in mobile equipment mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems is essential.
- Individual equipment repair certifications can be beneficial.
- Willingness to work in varying weather conditions.
- Must be willing to complete and successfully pass a drug screen, physical, and background check.
- Bilingual (English and Spanish) is a plus.

- Technical knowledge: Strong understanding of mobile equipment diesel and gasoline engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems, along with knowledge of the construction, assembly, and maintenance of heavy mobile equipment.
- Problem-solving: Strong logical thinking and problem-solving abilities to diagnose and fix complex issues.
- Manual dexterity: Physically fit to handle heavy parts and work in awkward positions for extended periods.
- Tool proficiency: Skilled in using a variety of hand tools and power tools, including pneumatic wrenches and welding equipment.
- Record keeping: Maintain accurate records of work performed and prepare reports.
- Attention to detail: Ability to prioritize tasks and communicate effectively.
- Computer skills: Proficient in relevant software for diagnostics and record-keeping.
