Position Summary

The Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing a fleet of heavy equipment and transportation assets to ensure optimal performance, reliability, and safety. This role supports a diverse fleet that includes forklifts ranging from 6,000 lb. capacity to Versa Lift 100/140k units, diesel tractors (Kenworth, International, and Freightliner), and trailers such as Landoll, RGN, and flatbed configurations. This role plays a critical part in minimizing equipment downtime, supporting operational efficiency, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory requirements. Depending on operational needs, the Mechanic may specialize in diesel, industrial, or material-handling equipment while demonstrating versatility across all assigned machinery.

Essential Job Duties And Responsibilities

  • Perform mid-level mechanical maintenance and repair on diesel trucks, trailers, forklifts, and rental lift equipment, including preventive maintenance, brake systems, and hydraulic systems.
  • Complete all scheduled preventive maintenance accurately and on time.
  • Inspect returned equipment promptly, initiate required repairs, and ensure renter-caused damage is documented and billed within 24 hours of check-in.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues using appropriate tools and diagnostic equipment; perform repairs and coordinate outside vendors for complex or specialized work as needed.
  • Schedule and prioritize maintenance and repairs to minimize downtime and support safe, timely equipment availability.
  • Verify equipment performance through operational testing, test drives, and inspection of hydraulic, electrical, and control systems before returning units to service.
  • Support high preventive maintenance standards (90% on-time PM completion) and assist in returning out-of-service (OOS) units to operation as quickly and safely as possible.
  • Maintain fleet and rental equipment in excellent working condition and professional appearance.
  • Perform annual equipment certifications and DOT inspections in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Accurately document inspections, services, and repairs in FC&C Software.
  • Collaborate with operators and shop teammates to diagnose unexpected breakdowns and coordinate timely repairs.
  • Manage maintenance cost by using warranty coverage and evaluating parts/service options.
  • Maintain parts and shop supply inventory, place orders as needed, and follow purchasing procedures for proper billing.
  • Demonstrate accountability, professionalism, and pride in workmanship; maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area daily.
  • Follow all company safety policies and ensure work is performed in compliance with OSHA and DOT standards.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Experience, Skills, And Education)

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required; additional technical or vocational training in diesel, automotive, or heavy equipment mechanics is preferred.
  • Two to five (2–5) years of experience as a fleet or heavy equipment mechanic, with hands-on experience maintaining and repairing diesel vehicles, trailers, and/or material-handling or rental equipment.
  • At least one (1) year of experience interpreting and working with hydraulic systems and wiring diagrams on heavy equipment and vehicles, including diagnostics and repair.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of intermediate proficiency using Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, and Outlook).
  • ASE, OEM, or manufacturer certifications (e.g., diesel, hydraulics, electrical systems, forklift or lift equipment) preferred.
  • Working knowledge of DOT, OSHA, and FMCSA regulations.
  • Experience with fleet maintenance software or computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS); experience with FC&C or similar systems a plus.

Physical Requirements And Working Conditions

  • The Mechanic will primarily work in a mechanical shop environment that may or may not be climate controlled.
  • Possible exposure to low-lit areas or high levels of noise.
  • Some work in outdoor environments with exposure to inclement weather; may access work via rough or uneven terrain.
  • Performance of work will require General Physical Activities – actions that necessitate the frequent use of hands, arms, legs, and moving the entire body; will climb, crouch/stoop, bend or balance as needed, and will handle, move, or lift objects of varying weights or shapes up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequent use of the senses involving speech, sight, sound, and touch.
