About the role

The Mechanic C position requires 1-2 years' experience. This role involves diagnosing and repairing vehicles and equipment under supervision, learning from more experienced mechanics, and possessing a CDL license or permit with air brakes and a passenger endorsement.

Responsibilities

  • Adjust and reline brakes, align wheels, tighten bolts and screws, and reassemble equipment.
  • Align front ends and suspension systems.
  • Attach test instruments to equipment and read dials and gauges to diagnose malfunctions.
  • Disassemble and overhaul internal combustion engines, pumps, generators, transmissions, clutches, and differential units.
  • Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts to ensure proper operation.
  • Inspect, repair, and maintain automotive and mechanical equipment and machinery such as pumps and compressors.
  • Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test instruments like handheld computers, motor analyzers, chassis charts, and pressure gauges.
  • Operate valve-grinding machines to grind and reset valves.
  • Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery.
  • Raise trucks, buses, and heavy parts or equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists.
  • Install or rebuild diesel engines.
  • Recondition and replace parts, pistons, bearings, gears, and valves.
  • Repair and adjust seats, doors, and windows, and install and repair accessories.
  • Rewire ignition systems, lights, and instrument panels.
  • Inspect and verify dimensions and clearances of parts to ensure conformance to factory specifications.
  • Specialize in repairing and maintaining parts of the engine, such as fuel injection systems.
  • Test drive trucks and buses to diagnose malfunctions or to ensure they are working properly.
  • Use hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, and precision instruments, as well as power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, lathes, welding equipment, and jacks and hoists.
  • Perform other duties to ensure the safe operation and efficiency of the department.

Requirements

  • Must be able to diagnose and repair some of the vehicles and equipment in service with supervision.
  • Willing to learn more difficult tasks from Mechanic As and Bs.
  • Must possess a CDL license or permit with air brakes and a passenger endorsement.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid CDL license or permit with air brakes and a passenger endorsement.

Skills

  • Diagnose and repair vehicles and equipment.
  • Use diagnostic and repair tools.
  • Work independently and in a team environment.
  • Communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors.

Pay

Starting Pay: $34.56 - $36.46

Full-time schedule.

Physical Demands

  • 10% of work is accomplished indoors and in air-conditioned or well-ventilated facilities.
  • 90% of work is accomplished outside in varying temperature, weather, and humidity conditions; most work is performed alone and in remote locations.
  • Frequent standing and walking; ability to sit for up to three hours; walk for long distances and on possible sloped ground or slippery and uneven surfaces; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; ability to lift or handle material weighing up to 50 to 75 lbs. without assistance; ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, and crouch; and corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication.
  • Exposure to heavy traffic areas while performing the duties of the job.
  • Exposure to considerable amounts of dust, vehicle fumes and noise.
  • Exposure to cleaning solutions, oils, and other liquids.
